Topic Selection • Consider the academic program and career path you have chosen or are interested in pursuing. • Example: I want to become a teacher. • Research current national or global issues affecting that field. • Example: • http://www.questia.com/library/education/current-issues-in-education • Example: School Violence • Example: Possible thesis: • Over the past ten years, violent acts in school settings have targeted public schools and have had a negative impact on the learning environment of schools in the United States.

  3. Requirements • Choose one of the following types of thesis defense: • Explanation of the issue • Problem/Solution • Cause and Effect • Utilize a minimum of 4 electronic and 1 print sources. • Write a 6-7 page paper (not including source page) analyzing the issue. • Include appropriate background information of the issue to support your thesis. • Use proper APA formatting including a title page. • Submit 1st and final drafts on the due dates as indicated on our schedule.

Developing Your Thesis • Essay’s subject:Violence in school has an effect on learning. • Vague; general; ineffective; unanswered questions. • Add main idea: There have been many acts of violence in schools and they have affected education. • More specific; still haven’t answered important questions. • Add evidence or support: • Over the past ten years, violent acts have plagued public schools and have had a negative impact on the learning environment of schools in the United States because students and teachers no longer feel safe. • Answers what, when, where, how, who, and why

  5. What a thesis is NOT: •Not an announcement. Example: I am going to tell you the importance of ABC. Just say it: The importance of ABC is XYZ. •Not introduced by an opinion phrase such as I think, I feel, I believe. Example: I feel that good hygiene begins with the basics of effective hand-washing.

  6. What a thesis is NOT: •Not a statement of fact. Example: George Will writes about economic equality in the United States. This a fact- can’t be disputed. •Not a question. Example: What makes a photograph so significant? A question cannot state anything because it is not a statement. (Use as a lead in not the thesis.)

  7. What a thesis is NOT: •Not a quote. Example: George Will writes, “Economic equality is good for the United States.” That’s his opinion – not your statement!
