  2. The Circulatory System Do you even lift Bro? • The main purpose of the Circulatory System is to: • Transport oxygen and carbon dioxide • Transport and deliver nutrients • Remove waste products • The Circulatory System is composed of: • The Heart • Veins • Arteries • Capillaries

  3. The Heart • Let’s get to the heart of the matter…….get it? ;) • The heart pumps blood through your body • It is actually two pumps in one, talk about bang for your buck. • And each pump has Two chambers! • 2x2=4, which means the heart has four chambers!

The Heart • The right side of the heart pumps blood to the lungs and consists of the Right Atrium and the Right Ventricle • Right Atrium pumps blood from the body into the Right Ventricle • Right Ventricles pump blood to the lung • The goal here is to take blood low in oxygen, high in carbon dioxide and to bring it to the lungs, where it exchanges carbon dioxide for oxygen • The left side of the heart pumps blood to the body and consists of the Left Atrium and the Left Ventricle • Left Atrium pumps blood from the lungs into the Left Ventricle • Left Ventricle pumps blood into the body

The Heart • Basically: • Right side of the heart is in charge of the lungs • Left side of the heart is in charge of the body • The heart is so strong, it pumps blood through 100, 000 Km of blood vessels • That is like running from one side of Canada to the other and back five times • If three people decided to untangle all their blood vessels and carefully stich them together, you could reach the moon! • The heart Works so hard, if you cut open before it pumps, it would shoot the blood up nearly 9 meters! That’s pretty hardcore

  11. Arteries, Veins and Capillaries • Arteries (think red) carry blood (oxygenated) AWAY from your heart and lungs to the body. • Think…”Arteries” and “Away” start with the same letter. • Veins (think blue) carry blood (deoxygenated) towards the heart and lungs, from the body

  17. Arteries, Veins and Capillaries • Capillaries allow oxygen to exit the blood to important tissues and absorb carbon dioxide to take back to the lungs. This is done through Diffusion. Capillary Beds are found on organs. Organs need oxygen and blood inside of capillaries supply them with oxygen. The Blood cells then run out of oxygen as they exit the capillary and enter the venule and veins.

  19. Blood • Blood is the second largest connective tissue in the body! (Bones are the largest) • Blood consists of: • Red blood cells (carry oxygen and carbon dioxide) • White blood cells (fight off infection) • Platelets (tiny cells that clot your blood to stop bleeding) • Plasma ( is 55% of total blood basically a liquid that suspends the blood and also carries carbon dioxide) This is what your blood looks like after doctors take it into the lab for sampling. Blood vials are put into a centrifuge which spins your blood at 4000 rpm which allows the components to split up according to mass.
