In the MTS procedure, a sample object is shown to the whale (e.g., a sphere), then the sample object is removed, and finally three choice objects are presented to the whale (e.g., sphere, cylinder, cube). The whale's task is to select the choice object that matches the sample. • Beluga Whale Echolocation • Details: The animal emits loud, high frequency sounds that bounce off of objects in its environment and return echoes to the animal's ears. The echoes carry information about the size, shape, material, and structure of objects. • Uses: Detect predators, locate prey, navigation • Project Tasks: • Create a functioning MTS apparatus. • Design and build two sets of 42 objects consisting of different sizes, shapes and materials. • Develop a user’s manual for the MTS apparatus. • Design a testing protocol for the step-by-step process of using the MTS apparatus. ) ) ) ) • Design Highlights: • Water bucket, tethers for added stability • Turntable for rotating apparatus to load/unload objects • Levelingfeet balance on uneven terrain • Gas springs raise and lower apparatus • Shields for double-blind MTS procedure • Three separate modules for portability • Short time between display of object sets • Whale safe, corrosion-proof structure • Single person operation Side View of Apparatus Final CAD Design When the mechanism is released, the objects are lowered into the water and presented to the whale.
