2. Frankenstein • ‘Frankenstein’ was written by a British novelist called Mary Shelley when she was 18 in 1818. • The novel is about a scientist called Victor Frankenstein who creates a larger and more powerful being in the likeness of man. • ‘Frankenstein’ has elements of the Gothic Horror genre.

3. Gothic Horror • Gothic Horror is the combination of TWO genres: Horror and Romance • Features of Gothic Horror include terror, mystery, the supernatural, ghosts, haunted houses, castles, darkness, death, decay, madness, secrets and curses. • Typical characters are vampires, demons, the Devil, magicians, madwomen and maniacs.

5. Well, I’ve been reading the news. There’s a scientist who brought a hand back to life! The man in my story is like him. Stubborn and brave. ‘Ere, you should totally write that ghost story into a book. It was really scary. How did you think of it?

6. I’m Dr Victor Frankenstein. I’m a scientist. I’m going to make a human out of dead body parts... But to do this, I need to steal them from graves. See her? That’s my ex, Elizabeth. I worked so hard that she gave up trying to get my attention. Making this monster cost me a lot. After the monster was finished, I dreamed about her a lot, but I never got her back.

7. ... And I’m what he made! I’m a nice guy, really! But when I woke up, Dr Frankenstein didn’t think I was, because I am ugly and slow, and can’t talk well. He thinks I want to hurt him, but I don’t. I try to make people happy, but they always think I’m dangerous. Dr F tried to make me a wife, but it didn’t work. Nobody wanted me. So in the end... I ran away to a place where nobody could find me.

8. I lost my wife, my son and my family – not to mention all of my friends – and I had created a horrible monster. I wish I’d have listened to my teachers when they told me not to do it! I tried to go after the monster to stop him hurting people. I chased him all the way to the Arctic, where he’d run to be away from people. In the end, I almost died – and I never found him. All my life’s work was gone forever.

9. There’re loads of ways. Setting – make it dark and scary – words – choose horrible ones! I want to make the chapter where the monster wakes up the scariest chapter in any book ever written. But how?

10. TASK: You must read through the start of Chapter 5 – where the monster wakes up - and explain to me how Mary Shelley makes it TENSE and SCARY for the reader. You have a plan and a copy of the opening to help you!
