A Little About Me… • Bachelors Degree in Economics from Cornell University • Taught in Japan for one year • Elementary Education Certification from University of Pennsylvania • Master’s Degree in Literacy from West Chester University, obtained Reading Specialist certification • 7th year teaching at GVES, 2nd in Fifth Grade

What’s new this year? • Class switching • Organization, responsibility, materials management • Prepare for GVMS • Math curriculum updates (more on that later) • Security updates to ensure a safe learning environment for students, staff, and visitors. • Visitors will press an intercom button to communicate with the office staff • Visitors will then enter the building, show ID, and sign in • We appreciate your support with these upgrades

  11. Birthdays and Class Parties • We have 24 students in our class • Birthday treats are always welcome! We will share them in the morning when we have time. • Class Parties include: • Halloween Party • Winter Party • Valentine’s Day • Grandparents’ Day

Daily Schedule 8:40-9:00Morning Work in Homeroom 9:00-10:00 Students switch classes: Math, Science, or Social Studies 10:00-12:00 Language Arts (Reading then Writing) 12:00-12:55 Lunch then Recess 1:00-2:00 Students switch classes: Math, Science, or Social Studies 2:00-3:00 Specials 3:00Dismissal from homeroom

Assignment Books and Homework • Homework is always written on the board; It is the student’s responsibility to write the homework down and complete it at home each day • 100 Book Challenge every day (15 lines per week) • KidBiz (3 Articles per week) • Word Study • Limited “formal” reading and writing HW

  14. Missed Homework? • Continuing to develop a sense of responsibility • Missing homework? • Students sign the “Missing Homework Log” • Stay in for recess to complete work • Contact home if regular occurrence

  15. Missed Classes and Absences • Band, Orchestra, Speech, etc. • Student’s responsibility to see me, collect missed work, and ask for help if needed • Extra help/study time available with me any day at recess

  16. Monday Folder • Sent home with students each Monday with important papers for families to review that night • All tests/quizzes must be signed and returned • Includes “Fridge Facts.” Please review and return bottom portion each Tuesday so I know you have read it

  17. Log Book • 100 Book Challenge log sheets • Reading Response pages (in the future) • Students will be kept in for recess if they fall behind on their lines or do not complete responses

  18. Word Study • Vocabulary Development • Prefixes/Suffixes • Word-a-day • Grammar Practice • Grammar Minutes • Edits • Transfer to writing • Quiz each Friday

  19. Writing • Fostering independence and interest • Write in various genres • Narrative, persuasive, informational, and poetry • Writer’s Notebook • Work through the Writing Process • Mini-lessons and Conferences • Improving the 5 domains • Focus, Content, Organization, Style, Conventions

Reading • Students work independently and/or in “book clubs” • Books differentiated by level and/or interest • Author studies, themed novel sets • Exposure to a variety of genres and a wide range of literature • Before, during, and after reading activities • Discussion/conversations & oral and written responses supported by evidence in the text

  21. 100 Book Challenge • Reading on independent level (~98% accuracy) • Strengthens: fluency, comprehension, expression • Conferencing in school • Please encourage this program at home and sign off as your child’s “coach” in 100 Book Challenge Folder • GOAL is 15 lines per week; students should keep up with the school targets

  22. KidBiz • Students all reading same articles, but on their individual levels • Can search by interest • 30 minutes a week in school • Three activities per week to keep up with school benchmark • Only scores 75% or higher count toward goal
