The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) and the Department of Corrections (DOC) initiated a cooperative Inmate Work Crew Program in 2006, benefiting the Commonwealth by utilizing inmate labor for various public projects. Crews consisting of 5-10 inmates, supervised by correctional officers, engage in activities such as trash pickup, landscaping, and maintenance. The program not only provides work experience for inmates but also results in significant cost savings for the state, generating over $17 million annually compared to contractor crews while ensuring the safety and care of crew members.
