  1. Class of 2009 College and Financial Aid

  2. This presentation…. The following information may be a review for some of you. The first few slides will review the college application process. The last few slides will talk about financial aid and the FAFSA application. Please give your attention to this presentation and remember to stop by the guidance office if you have questions.

  3. College Applications For most of you, college applications are due by December 1. That means that all application materials must be sent and transcripts requested by November 17th. This will give the guidance office time to process your requests. Remember, we are closed over Thanksgiving break.

  4. Counselor/College Prep Forms Many Colleges require the guidance counselor to complete a “counselor page” or “college prep form” as part of the application. These forms need to be submitted to the guidance office by November 17th if you would like them completed by December 1st. Please check your applications to be sure that you have completed all steps.

  5. ACT/SAT Scores Most colleges are now requiring your ACT/SAT scores be sent directly from the testing company. If you have not already done so through your ACT/SAT registration, go to the testing websites to have scores sent directly to the colleges. • ACT – www.actstudent.org • SAT – www.collegeboard.com

  6. Financial Aid Everyone needs financial aid when it comes to paying for college. There are very few people in this country that can simply pay cash for a college education. For many of you, your parents may have been responsible for the finances in your life. That is going to change. Although your parents may be paying for some of your college tuition, it is completely up to you to apply for aid.

  7. Scholarships and Grants Most scholarships and Grants that you receive will come directly from the school that you will attend. Most of the time, simply completing the college application and submitting it by December 1st will put you in the running for this money. Some schools do have separate applications. Be sure to thoroughly check the college’s website and application.

  8. Local Scholarships Many clubs and businesses in the Lebanon area support our seniors by providing scholarship opportunities. Many offer the applications through LHS guidance. These applications will be available beginning Jan. 20, 2008. A list of these scholarships will be given out in TEAM in January.

  9. FAFSA • FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. • ALL STUDENTS applying for any type of post-high school education needs to complete the FAFSA • Money is awarded based on financial need. Your GPA, rank, comm. svc., etc. is not taken in to account.

  10. FAFSA • FAFSA is a program run by the Federal Government. • Money is given in two forms; grants and loans. A Grant is money given to you that does not have to be re-paid . Loans need to be re-paid, but re-payment is usually deferred until 6 months after you graduate from college. • Most colleges REQUIRE you to apply for FAFSA aid…..even if you don’t think you will qualify for money.

  11. FAFSA – PIN number • The FAFSA application will need to be completed by both you and your parent/guardian. • Both you and your parent/guardian will need to get a PIN number to complete this application. Since the FAFSA is completed online, the PIN number acts as your “electronic signature”.

  12. FAFSA – PIN number • You and your parent/guardian will each need your own PIN number • Go to www.FAFSA.ed.gov to submit a request for your PIN number. • You may get your PIN number at any time. It is suggested that you get your PIN number by December 30, 2008.

  13. FAFSA Application • You may not begin the actual FAFSA application until January 1, 2009. • The application will ask many questions about you and your parent’s/guardian’s income. You and your parents will need to have income tax information handy when completing this form. • The FAFSA must be completed by February 15, 2009.

  14. 1 1/2 Months! From the time you can begin the FAFSA (Jan. 1) to the time that it is due (Feb. 15) is only 1 ½ months! That means, if you have questions or problems completing the FAFSA, you are not going to have a lot of time to ask. You need to be pro-active and very organized!

  15. Be Pro-Active • Attend the free financial aid seminar on October 16th at LHS at 7:00pm. • Attend the free FAFSA seminar at LHS on December 2nd, 2008 at 7:00pm. • Attend “College Goal Sunday” on Feb. 8th for one-on-one help with the FAFSA. Register at a nearby location by going to www.collegegoalsunday.com

  16. Financial Aid Offices Every college has an entire office dedicated to your financial aid. If you feel that you have a special circumstance regarding paying for college or if you have a question that no one else has been able to answer, contact your college’s financial aid office. They are there to help! Look on the college’s website for phone or e-mail information.

  17. Thanks! Thanks for watching! PLEASE – do not procrastinate! There is nothing that anyone can do if you miss financial aid deadlines! This PowerPoint will be available on the guidance website at www.lebanon.k12.oh.us
