  1. Computer Operating Systems The Big 3

  2. Menu References

  3. PC Windows • The primary operating system for the majority of computer users around the world is Windows. Many different versions of Windows exist, and people use different iterations for different applications. The most current version of Windows released is Windows 7, with Windows 8 already in the works for tablet PC’s as well as desktops. Next

  4. PC – cont. • As of August 2011 Windows has approximately %82 of the market share of client operating systems. %82! Microsoft is a major player in enterprise software and a good majority of the %82 is due to that. Large scale businesses that incorporate technology can be slow to update to newer versions for time, money and resource reasons. Windows has remained a backbone of the enterprise industry in that some people (for better or worse) rely on programs from 15+ years ago to run their modern day businesses. While this can be seen as a positive for longevity and cost reduction, at what point do you keep supporting what in the technology industry is considered archaic. Back Next

  7. Mac OS X • Macs are used around the world by everyone from creative professionals to your grandma checking email. OS X (Pronounced Oh-Ess-Ten) has garnered much negative attention for various reasons (but so have Windows and Linux) throughout the years; however loyal users such as myself would never imagine using another computer other than a Mac. 8. Mac – cont. • Common Misconception: • “Macs don’t get viruses” • No computer is 100% susceptible to acquiring a virus. Macs are no different. Where did this misconception come from though? While it is true that Macs cannot be affected by any virus/malware that would affect a Windows machine, that does not mean that it cannot get one written for OS X. The simple fact of the matter is as previously stated Windows has a ridiculous market share, if you’re going to write a virus you’re going to want to get the biggest user base out there. This is why so many different virus/malware exploits exist for Windows. Back Next

  11. Linux is an operating system assembled under the model of free and open source software development and distribution. The defining component of any Linux system is the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released October 5, 1991 by Linus Torvalds.Linux system distributions may vary in many details of system operation, configuration, and software package selections. Linux is widely used for various things due to it’s open source nature, allowing cost to be kept down on software. Next

  12. Linux – Cont. There are many different options of Linux distributions to try which makes Linux a fun tool for nerds to play around with if they want to try to understand how computers work on a more in depth level. Examples of Linux distro’s are Debian, Ubuntu and Red Hat. • Linux is interesting in all aspects. It’s free, available to anyone with an internet connection, and can be widely scaled for almost any use. Linux however is the only one of the three OS’s mentioned where many variations stem from the same core Linux Kernel which powers many tastes of Linux. Back Next

  13. Cool Linux Download Wibu Wibu is a utility that allows you to install Ubuntu Linux along side your pre-existing Windows installation. Very easy to use and a great way to test out Linux if you are thinking about switching over. Back Next

  14. Linux Tips Ubuntu is probably the best Linux distro to try if you are wanting to get your feet wet with Linux. It’s a great alternative OS for older machines. Best of all Ubuntu has an option that lets you try it on a CD/DVD without affecting your Windows install. If you’d like you can also download a tool that allows you to run Windows and Ubuntu on the same computer with an easy installer. Back Menu
