  1. Diffusion • A passive process • Movement molecules (food, wastes, or secretions) from areas of higher concentration to areas of lower concentration.

  2. Osmosis • Diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane from high concentration areas to low concentration areas

  3. Solution = Solute + Solvent • Solute – • A mixture of chemicals that are dissolved in the solvent (usually a water base) • Solvent – • The dissolving medium. It is what the solute dissolves into (usually water)

  4. Selectively Permeable Membrane • Allows for diffusion to occur • Allows water and small molecules (sugars) to pass through, keeping larger molecules (starches and proteins) out

  5. Tonicity Isotonic Concentration of solutes inside and outside the cell are equal Hypertonic Concentration of solutes outside the cell is higher than inside the cell. Cell shrinks Hypotonic Concentration of solutes outside the cell is lower than inside the cell. Cell swells
