Rooftop market is the most common form of PV power in developed markets of PV About the picture: Q-Cells modules at a typical Installation in Japan Source: QC Research Source:1. BSW, 10/2008 2. Photon 05/2010
The roof top PV market becomes important for several reasons: #1 Avoid Transmission costs (& loss) About the picture: Q-Cells modules at a typical Installation in Germany EXAMPLE: GERMANY Source: QC Research About the picture: Q.SMART UF L reference Affi, Verona, Italy 686 kWp of Q.SMART UF L 100 W C&I Carport solution Completion: March 2011
The roof top PV market becomes important for several reasons: #2 Reduce Diesel Consumption Source: QC Research Source:1. BSW, 10/2008 2. Photon 05/2010
The roof top PV market becomes important for several reasons: #3 Self consumption of PV About the picture: Q-Cells installation at Chanyakapuri, New Delhi

WHAT’S ON TODAY’S AGENDA? • Q-CELLS AT A GLANCE • THE IMPORTANCE OF ROOFTOPS IN INDIA • 3. KEY CHALLENGES IN ROOFTOP MARKET IN INDIA • SUMMARY
Issue #1:Choosing technology at is a important design criteria On a flat roof, Q.SMART generates 80% of its maximum yield c-Si only 69% Less mounting structure needed, i.e. optimal utilization of roof surface
Technology differences under roof orientation conditions About the picture: Residential facility Braunfels, North 45° Germany
Issue #2: Minimizing shading is a important design criteria Q.PRO 60 cells connected in series 3 strings of 20 cells, each string protected by Bypass diode Q.SMART UF L 119 cell stripes connected in series and protected by Bypass diode
Issue #2: Minimizing shading is a important design criteria CRYSTALLINE MODULE (e.g. Q.Pro) Q.SMART UF L • Cells in every string shaded output zero • 2 of 3 strings affected output reduced by 2/3 • More than one cell stripe shaded Output zero • Output depends on shaded area
Rooftop systems need to minimize shading About the picture: A typical mapping tool in Australia About the picture: A mapping for Delhi, India
Issue #3: Maximizing total yields requires detailed site analysis About the picture: \ Q.FLAT system ILIOTEC – REGENSBURG – 252 kWp
Detailed Site Analysis was a corner stone of the Q-Cells installation at New Delhi Marking mounting structure location Laser alignment Shading analysis in Software Mounting structure Installation Structure Commissioned Creating cement blocks Module Installation c-Si Installation done Thin film Installation done A High Quality 10.47 kWp rooftop with weather station and Remote monitoring was done in 25 days
The IGCC PV project plays a role in the chain of world wide tests being conducted by Q-Cells • INDIA – New Delhi 10.47 KWp • QBASE, QSMART UFL
Issue #4: It is known that PV Modules have to be robust in hot climates & with high moistures About the picture: 5.5 MWp Q.SMART Solar Mission project at Jodhpur About the picture: 150 kWp rooftop at Schindler, flat-roof North 2°, Germany * Modified from Solar Energy Centre at SolarCon 2010
Issue #4: It is known that PV Modules have problems in hot climates & with moistures • Case Study: A Solar Energy Centre study of modules from eleven PV manufacturers from 1999-2010 • Degradation between 32% - 8% • Out of 11 manufacturers, 8 showed major degradation • Only 3 manufacturer module limits were ≤ 10% • Failure of modules due to • Junction Box detachments • Corrosion of terminals • Hot Spots * Source: 1.Solar Energy Centre at SolarCon 2010
Issue #4 It is known that PV Modules have problems in hot climates & with moistures ! Fact: It could be worse with modules with Tier-2,3 manufacturers Source: An extract from a warranty clause from a Tier-1 Chinese cSi module manufacturer
WHAT’S ON TODAY’S AGENDA? • Q-CELLS AT A GLANCE • THE IMPORTANCE OF ROOFTOPS IN INDIA • 3. KEY CHALLENGES IN ROOFTOP MARKET IN INDIA • SUMMARY
SUMMARY • Rooftop installations should be an important segment to the PV installations in India • Grid-parity for residential segment knocks at the doors • Not every rooftop in India is suitable for a rooftop PV system • Qualiity matters : Robust modules & quality systems is the need of the hour for Indian PV projects.

Observations in India have also confirmed that unlike IEC tests, C-Si modules do not behave uniformly • A long term testing was conducted by SEC (Gurgaon) on 11 PV manufactures • HIGH PERFORMANCE DEGRADATION UP TO 32% OBSERVED • MINIMUM DEGRADATION < 8% IS ALSO OBSERVED • OUT OF 11 MANUFACTURER 8 OF THEM SHOWED MAJOR DEGRADATION • ONLY 3 MANUFACTRERS MODULE WERE UNDER ACCEPTABLE LIMITS ≤ 10% • 2. There were several failure modes of the modules • -TERMINAL BOX DETACHMENT • -TERMINAL CORROSION, • -BY PASS DIODE FAILURES, AND • -BURNING SPOTS Source: Solar Energy Centre (Gurgaon), SolarCon 2010
The “VDE Quality Tested (VQT)” process involves stringent product checks that are well beyond IEC tests More intense tests performed
