  1. Instructions: Read the following paragraph silently and write down on a sheet of loose leaf paper what you think is wrong with the paragraph. They can be designed with many different shapes, forms, and sizes. Anyone can participate and my grandmother often does. The necessary lift is generated when airflow over and under creates low pressure above it and high pressure below it. They can take the form of flat geometric designs, box shapes, and other three-dimensional forms. I started when I was just child, and mine had a simple geometric form. You have to be careful, because they can be dangerous though causing power blackouts and running the risk of electrocution. What do you think of my favorite activity?”

  2. What is main idea? -The main idea refers to what a paragraph or article is about. It is the most important idea that the author wants the reader to know. -“Main” means what is important or key; “idea” means the thought or topic. -The main idea unifies the entire paragraph with one central message. -The main idea will always be a COMPLETE SENTENCE, never just a word like “love” or “faith.”

  3. What is the purpose of finding the main idea? -Good readers need to find the main idea so that they are not confused while reading the text. -By finding the main idea, we will understand the point that the author is trying to make in the text. In the paragraph that I just read, you did not know the main idea. How did that make you feel? Did you understand what the paragraph was about?

  4. How/ Where do you find the main idea? Where: In English paragraphs, the main idea is most likely found in one of these places: • in the first sentence • in the last sentence • not stated in the paragraph directly (inferred by the reader) How: -Step 1: Find the sentence that is central to the understanding of the text -Step 2: Try taking out (omitting) a sentence of the text. Does the text still make sense? If so, this sentence is not the main idea. -Step 3: Repeat until you find the sentence that is central to the meaning of the text. If you remove a sentence and the paragraph can no longer be understood, then you have found the main idea of the sentence.

  5. Practice finding the main idea
