  3. December 7th, 1941 Attack at Pearl Harbor 6 aircraft carriers 360 airplanes Battleships, cruisers, and subs

  4. 2500 killed Left little doubt – declared war on Japan Moved from isolationists to interventionists House voted 388 – 1 to join in

  5. During the course of the war 16 million Americans served All ethnic and racial backgrounds joined Segregated units! Limited at first to supporting roles! Tuskegee Airmen Navajo Code Talkers

  6. WAC Women’s Army Corps -1943 – Provided clerical workers, truck drivers, instructors etc…for the US Army 150,000 600 received medals!

  7. War Production Board – 1942 – Massive spending! Created military materials. First time in 10 years – a job for every worker!

  8. Fighting in the Pacific General Douglas MacArthur – commander of US Army in Asia Japan had taken Guam, Wake Island and Hong Kong

  9. December 22, 1941 MacArthur miscalculated strength of Japan Forced to retreat Fell from Manila to Bataan Soldiers had to surrender to Japanese - 75,000

  10. Bataan Death March Now POW’s – Prisoners of War Forced to march 55 miles to Bataan Peninsula More than 700 died…

  11. Battle of Coral Sea Battle in the Pacific – May 1942 Fought Japanese without ever seeing them – Gave us a new sense of confidence
