  1. Instructional Strategies for English Language Learners Presented by: Amy Geis

  2. Vocabulary Environmental print, word walls, and calendars are examples of supporting language development through making connections.

  3. Phonemic Awareness Games and activities are a fun and effective way to provide students with an authentic opportunity for language use. Theses activities also emphasize the connection between letters and sounds.

  4. Phonics Combining phonics with games helps students learn letter/sound relationships in a fun and memorable way! This particular game is called the “Zz” Zoo. Students pick up a picture card and detect the beginning sound of the word displayed. If the word starts with the “Zz” sound, students lift the gate and place that card inside the “Zz” Zoo. If the word doesn’t begin with the “Zz” sound, the card is set aside.

  5. Realia This activity uses realia to introduce and review vocabulary. Students place their hand inside this box to touch and feel each hidden item. After making predictions, the teacher reveals the hidden items and discusses all vocabulary words with students.

  6. Interactive Lessons This lesson incorporates a variety of skills such as comprehension, following directions, and writing. After listening to Froggy Goes To Camp, students made their own frogs and wrote a few sentences about where their frog went.

  7. Differentiation Differentiation allows students to experience and understand the many purposes for language.

  8. Classroom Environment One way to create a positive classroom environment is to display student work. Students feel accepted when their work is displayed throughout the classroom.

  9. My Experience • While student teaching for seven weeks at Bledsoe Elementary in Frisco ISD, I was able to utilize these strategies to meet the needs and interests of ELLs. • I found vocabulary, phonemic awareness, realia, interactive lessons, differentiation, and classroom environment to be effective instructional strategies for ELLs.
