The UK as a multi-faith society The UK is made up of many races, cultures and RELIGIONS... Before WW2 there were few people who followed a religion other than Christianity... WHY DID THIS CHANGE? The UK called upon members of the Commonwealth to help rebuild Britain. In the 60’s and 70’s there was a large influx of people from India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. This led to a growth in Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs.
So what are the ADVANTAGES of living in a multi-faith society? It makes people think more about religion and their own beliefs. Look at the sheet which has ten arguments on it. Some are advantages or plus points of living in a multi-ETHNIC society – label those “ME” Some are advantages or plus points of living in a multi-FAITH society – label those “MF” Remember to write a key at the bottom. It helps to stop religious conflict and tension – e.g. Islamaphobia New ways of living and enjoying life – e.g. Yoga, dancing, meditation... The ADVANTAGES of a multi-faith society... People can learn about other religions – it can help them to see what religions have in common. RELGIOUS FREEDOM – religious groups will be able to live peacefully together. People are more likely to be more understanding, tolerant, and respectful to other religions.

How do people deal with living in a multi-faithsociety? It has not been easy for the UK to become a multi-faith society. There have been many instances over the years of religious tension and religious motivated violence and hate crimes (like in the starter activity). Most believers (and non-believers) in the UK accept that people should be allowed to follow whatever religion they want. However some people are not so sure and think that their religion is the right one and that EVERYONE should follow it. There are THREE main views... INCLUSIVISM AND EXCLUSIVISM lead to further issues in society... • RELIGIOUS PLURALISM • Many religions lead to God • People should have FREEDOM to worship any religion OR none. • INCLUSIVISM • Only ONE religion is completely right. • Other religions should be RESPECTED but people should be encouraged to CONVERT. • EXCLUSIVISM • Only ONE religion is right the rest are WRONG. • Members of the RIGHT faith should CONVERT the rest.
ISSUES raised when living in a multi-faith society When believers from different religions live together in one place there can be issues if one religious group tries to convert another. Dear Deirdre, I'm a Christian guy who loves a Muslim girl and we have been in a relationship for about 3 years. Everything was going smoothly until we had a discussion about marriage and future plans. The problem is that I am sure her parents would not agree to us marrying. The only option is to get secretly married and reveal it at right time to her parents (this might prove costly as I'm sure her family would react badly to the news). Religion threatens our love Read the problem opposite. Highlight the issues faced in this letter on your copy. How might these problems lead to conflict and tensions between religions? Secondly, the issue is how our kids will be raised. Though she agreed that she doesn't mind our kids being raised Christian, she said she wouldn't help me in doing so. I personally feel that kids should be nurtured under a single religion and both the parents should actively participate in this activity. I don't know what to do and am really confused about the whole thing. I’ve tried talking to her but we always end up arguing and the issue is never resolved. Tomfrom Leeds.
