  1. Exploration & Production Summer Standards MeetingHyatt Regency San Francisco, CaliforniaJune 28 - 29, 2011 TG3: Oil Mud Testing Procedures Report To SC13

  2. TG3: Oil Mud Testing Procedures TG Charge: Recommend needed changes and develop test procedures for field and laboratory testing of oil-based drilling fluids (results usually published in API RP 13B-2 / ISO 10414-2 and RP 13I / ISO 10416)

  3. TG3 Members • Marvin Pless / Baker Hughes – Chair • David Dino / Elementis – Secretary • Brent Estes/ Chevron • Larry Mitchell / OFITE • Paul Scott / ConocoPhillips • Tom Shumate / Baroid • Catalin Ivan / ExxonMobil • Tim Wilkin / M-I

  4. TG3 Report To SC13 • WG1: Oil Mud Chemical Analysis • Tom Shumate Chair – Baroid - Hibernation • WG2: HPHT Direct Indicating Viscometers • Keith Morton Chair - Chevron • WG3: Particle Size Distribution Testing of OBM / SBM • Greg Perez Chair - Halliburton • WG4: Measurement of NAF Internal Phase Activity Modifiers • Brent Estes Chair - Chevron

  5. TG3 / WG2HPHT Direct Indicating Viscometers Chairperson Keith Morton / Chevron WG Charge: Develop a recommended operating practice for concentric cylinder viscometers capable of viscosity measurements at pressures greater than 10,000 psig used to characterize the rheological properties of WBM and OBM at elevated temperatures.

  6. TG3 / WG2HPHT Direct Indicating Viscometers Status: • Procedure has been revised by Keith Morton but still lacks introduction providing overview for user • WG Chair / TG Chair to submit draft to publication TG by August 1, 2011

  7. TG3 / WG3Particle Size Distribution Testing of OBMs/SBMs Chairperson Greg Perez / Halliburton WG Charge: Propose a method(s) for determining PSD’s of NAF’s to be included in API RP13I.

  8. TG3 / WG3 Particle Size Distribution Testing of OBMs/SBMs Work Group Members: Tim Wilkin M-I Swaco Stephen Ward-Smith Malvern Keith Morton Chevron Nathan Tarver Newpark Carl LaCombe NOV Fluids Chris Steele Elkem Saleh Al-Ammari Aramco Patricia Potts Baker Hughes

  9. TG3 / WG3 Particle Size Distribution Testing of OBMs/SBMs WG considerations: • Wettability of solids • Homogenization methods • Obscuration values • Generalized parameters to avoid exclusion of existing equipment • Adaptability of procedure for use at the rig site – HS&E issues with solvents commonly used for OBM PSD

  10. TG3 / WG3 Particle Size Distribution Testing of OBMs/SBMs WG meetings decision: • Limit WG scope to fully dispersed sample systems WG action items: • Review SOP utilized by laboratories as a basis for establishing procedure for round robin testing • Distribute sample to participating laboratories for round robin testing • Identify replacement WG chairman as Greg Perez has a new role at Halliburton/Baroid

  11. TG3 / WG4Measurement of NAF Internal Phase Activity Modifiers Chairperson Brent Estes/ Chevron WG Charge: Validate activity measurements for estimating concentrations of activity modifiers in NAFs and recommend a methodology for using activity measurements to estimate the soluble activity modifiers to allow calculations for low gravity / high gravity solids content in NAFs.

  12. Work Group Members: William Benton Cabot David Breeden Newpark Kim Burrows Halliburton / Baroid Andres Diaz BP David Ekas Marathon Brent Estes Chevron Carl Lacombe NOV Fluids Joe Perez Baker Hughes Randy Ray M-I SWACO Paul Scott ConocoPhillips Shannon Stocks ExxonMobil TG3 / WG4Measurement of NAF Internal Phase Activity Modifiers

  13. TG3 / WG4Measurement of NAF Internal Phase Activity Modifiers • Held two work group meetings since Winter SC13 meetings in Fort Worth, Texas • Established a list of activity modifiers (7) to test. • Developed round robin test matrix to determine accuracy and repeatability of hygrometers on select activity modifiers. • Next meeting planned for first of August to review results from 1st round robin tests. • Recruiting additional members with laboratories to participate in round robin testing.

  14. TG3 / WG4Measurement of NAF Internal Phase Activity Modifiers • Activity Modifiers: • Calcium Nitrate • Potassium Acetate • Sodium Acetate • Sodium Formate • Potassium Formate • Cesium Formate • Polyglycerine • Does anyone have any to add?

  15. Particle Plugging Test Revision for Inclusion in RP13B-2 • Met with TG4/WG2, Ceramic PPT Procedure Re-Write • New procedure is applicable to RP13B-1, RP13B-2 and 13I • WG2 chaired by Larry Mitchell has completed its revisions and will submit to TG2 Publications for final editing/formatting • Formatted addendum to be sent to TG3 and TG4 by Cheryl Stark / TG2 for final review followed by electronic ballot for SC13 approval

  16. TG3: Oil Mud Testing Procedures • Announcement • ISO 10414-2 (API RP13B-2) has been published – Thank You Cheryl! • Old Business • ??? • New Business • Ron Bland • Adjourn
