The Kalamunda Experience • Public Meeting October 2008 • Keys to the building April 2009 • Operations commenced August 2009 • Shed Boss commences January 2010 • Our first 100th member June 2011 • Limited access to Lesmurdie Shed October 2011 • Cease operations at old Shed July 2012 • First general meeting held in new Shed August 2012 • Commence limited operations at new Shed August 2012 • KMS obtains Health Promoting Charity status (DGR) August 2012

This is what we did (do) • Started with a basic shed to capitalise on the enthusiasm (with Shire support) • A Shed Boss (20hr per week), paid by the Shire • Positive focus on men’s health (1/3 meetings) • Performance reviews (are we meeting our objectives?) • Review of corporate governance • Monthly newsletters • Monthly excursions • Council elections (serendipity?)

Success factors • Support/patronage • Welcoming culture promoted • Being embraced by the local community • Someone responsible • Regular attendance (Shed days, GM’s and other ) • Strong, active, motivated committee with deputies • Members willing to pitch in • Clear objectives • Good communications/publicity • Satisfactory facility • Stimulating programme
