Some statistics about teaching • The average age of a teacher is 44 years (Sept 2004 census). • 16% of teachers are over 55 years • In Highland Council 50% of the teaching workforce is due to retire over the next 5 to 10 years. • The last Scottish Executive aimed to have 53,000 teachers by 2007 • Scotland still needs you to teach!

Routes into Teaching • Full-time Programme • Starts end of August • Not all subjects offered • Only cognate subjects offered as a joint qualification • 2 yr Part-time option subject to LA support/demand • Primary, English, Gaelic, Home Economics, Maths and Physics • High priority subjects: Maths, Gaelic, Physics, Technological Education, Home Economics • High demand subjects (with limited places):Biology, Business Education, History and Modern Studies

Entry Requirements • A degree with a minimum of 80 credit points in the specialist subject – 40 of which must be at SCQF level 8 • Higher English (or equivalent) • Standard Grade Maths (grade 1 or 2) – Primary only • Full details of individual subject requirements noted online at Teaching in Scotland website: http://www.teachinginscotland.com
