    14. Fossils Dinosaurs are one type of fossil. We are going to be starting a new unit that will help us to learn about many different kinds of fossils and how scientists learn about them. A lot of the stories that we will be reading will be expository writing.

    15. Thinking About the Theme Can you think of any stories that you have read about fossils? What do you already know about fossils?

    16. Read Aloud The selection that we are going to be reading is nonfiction and is divided into chapters. The book has a lot of illustrations with captions. The story we will read tells about a national park in the United States that you could visit to find fossils firsthand.

    17. Discussing the Read Aloud How does this read aloud relate to fossils? What did you learn about fossils? Where could you go to see fossils? How did this story change your ideas about fossils?

    18. Building Background What are fossils? Where might you see fossils? Have you ever had any personal experiences with fossils? Why do you think scientists and other people are interested in fossils?

The author’s purpose in this piece of writing is to explain what information scientists and others can learn from studying fossils.
