Today’s Objectives • You will compose a one-page journal entry in response to the following question: “How has Bartolome changed Juan’s life?” • You will completely fill in the Chapter 13 Flowchart we read chapter 13 aloud. • You will take thorough notes on the process of composing a response to literature essay. • You will receive the prompt for your response to literature essay. • You will work as a class to create a rubric for their outlines and thesis statements. • You will independently fill in your outlines and compose a thesis statement for your upcoming response to literature essay. • You will peer edit one another’s outlines and thesis statements based on the class-composed rubric and provide feedback on areas your partners can improve.

But Why Ms. Cluff?... • Many of you are thinking, “Why do we have to write an essay?” • We are learning how to write effective outlines and thesis statements so that your essays will be organized, flow more smoothly, and overall, you will become better writers, which will prepare you for eighth grade, high school, college, and beyond. • We are analyzing literature to prepare us for the benchmarks, the CST, and future applications and assignments that you may encounter as you make your way into high school, college, and the professional world. • You will be expected to know how to write an effective and meaningful response to literature essay next year, in high school, and especially in college, so let’s learn it correctly and completely now so that you won’t have to worry about it later.

  5. Journal Do Now (page 44L) Write one full page in response to the following question: “In what ways has Bartolome had a profound effect on Juan’s life?” *There is no right or wrong answer as long as you are responding to this question. I want you to think and write.

  6. Chapter 13 (Page 44R) • As we read through chapter 13, fill in your flowchart. • You will tape the flowchart to page 44R after we go over it after the reading.

  7. (page 45L) Response to literature essay • You are going to tape your essay prompt to page 45L to ensure that you don’t lose it and so that it will be easy to refer back to. • Essay topic… • In what threeways does BartolomeEsteban Murillo have a profoundeffect on Juan's life?

(Page 45R) Response to Literature Essay Things to remember… • This is NOT a summary • This is an essay in which you will analyze some aspect of the novel. • Writing is a Process: Pre-writing, outlining, rough drafts, and final drafts are necessary for an effective essay. • There should not be any 1st or 2nd person pronouns in your essay. Steps to writing: • Pre-Writing (We’ve done some of this in our journal activities and previous class discussions.) • Outline your essay • Write a rough draft • Revise your rough draft • Write your final draft

Outline (page 46L) Copy this outline into your interactive notebooks and skip about 2 lines in between each Roman Numeral. • Introduction—restate prompt and tell readers what the essay will be about • Body Paragraph #1--Way #1 that Bartolome changed Juan’s life • Body Paragraph #2—Way #2 that Bartolomechanged Juan’s life • Body Paragraph #3—Way #3 that Bartolome changed Juan’s life • Conclusion—wrap everything up and make your point

Thesis Statement (page 46R) • To compose a strong introduction you need a clear, one-sentence thesis statement. • The most specific point in your introduction should be the thesis. • This sentence will tell readers what your entire essay is going to be about, and it will keep you focused. • You want to state your claim and briefly state your three reasons. • This will be the last sentence of your introduction paragraph. Ex. Bartolome impacts Juan’s life because/when reason #1, reason #2, and reason #3.

Outline and Thesis Statement Rubric The purpose of writing an outline is to plan your essay ahead of time and keep yourself on track as you write your essay. • What should your outline have? • Claim in the intro P • 3 reasons (1 for each body P); should be supporting the claim • Correct spelling and grammar • What shouldn’t it have? • Misspelled words or grammar errors • Supporting details in the wrong place • Don’t need quotes The purpose of the thesis statement is to briefly tell your reader what the entire essay is going to be about. • What should your thesis statement have? • 3 reasons -goes at the end of intro P • Topic of essay -claim • Complete sentence -clearly stated • Tells what the essay will be able • Brief -1 sentence • Have shouldn’t it have? • Shouldn’t have details -no run-on sentence • Shouldn’t be off topic -no spelling/ grammar errors

  12. What your outline/thesis statement should look… • Outline I. Introduction II. Body #1—Bartolome is Juan’s friend. III. Body #2—Bartolome is one of the first people to show Juan respect. IV. Body #3—When Juan shows Bartolome his painting, Bartolome praises Juan’s painting and encourages him to continue painting. V. Conclusion • Thesis Statement • Bartolomeimpacts Juan’s life by being his friend, showing him respect, and encouraging him to continue painting. • ??—Many of you are already good writers, but how can we take your writing to the next level?

  13. Thesis statement and Outline • Right now you have 5 minutes to: • fill in your outline with the three reasons you are going to use in your essay for body paragraphs 1, 2, and 3. (Roman Numerals II., III., and IV.) (page 46L) • Write an effective thesis statement on your index card. (We will tape this index card onto page 46R under your notes for thesis statement.)

Peer Editing • Step One: Switch notebooks with someone at your table. • Step Two: Read over your partner’s outline and thesis statement a few times. • Step Three: Refer back to the rubric we came up with to provide your partner with some feedback. • Step Four: Under your partners outline and/or thesis statement, write two things your partner needs to work on and two things your partner is doing really well. • Step Five: Once both of you have written 4 comments in each others’ notebooks, have a quick conversation discussing your findings and offering support and possible changes. • Step Six: Take about 5 more minutes to edit your outline and/or thesis statement based on the feedback you received from your partner.

(page 47R) New Words… • Assumption—noun—the act of assuming or taking for granted • Characteristic—noun—a quality that makes something recognizable • Chronological—adjective—arranged in the order in which events occur • Conflict—noun—opposition between or among different forces; clash • Critique—noun—an assessment, usually of a creative work • Focus—verb—to look closely at • Involvement—noun—participation • Reaction—noun—an opposing action, a response • Sequence—noun—one thing after another in logical or chronological order • Summarize—verb—briefly state the most important events in a story

  19. Introduction Paragraph (page 48R) • There are 4 components to an effective Introduction Paragraph hook. book info. Quick summary. Thesis statement. • It will have an interesting, general opening or hook. (1 sentence) • You will introduce the author and title in the second or third sentence. (1-2) • Add some connected ideas before and after the introduction of the author. (2-3) • The introduction will be a minimum of four sentences. • The introduction will have a clear and complete thesis as the lastsentence. (1)

Book information: Title, author, and the main characters and actions that relate to the topic of the essay. • Title: I, Juan de Pareja • Author : Elizabeth Borton de Trevino • Main Characters: Juan de Pareja, Diego Velasquez, Bartolome Murillo • The story of I, Juan de Pareja, by Elizabeth de Trevino, is about Juan, Diego, and Murillo painting what they really see.

  22. III. Quick Summary of story (2 or 3 sentences) • Juan de Pareja, who was forbidden to paint because he was a slave, painted without anyone knowing until he met Murillo. Murillo was understanding of Juan’s love to paint and approved of Juan’s painting.

Thesis Statement : • -One sentence that ALWAYS comes as the last sentence of the introduction paragraph. • -It tells readers what the entire essay is going to be about. • Format: restate the prompt/question of the essay + reason #1, reason #2, and reason #3. • Murillo changed Juan’s life by being his friend, encouraging Juan to continue painting, and giving him a studio to live in after Diego dies.
