  6. Fur vs. Hair

  7. Hair & nails • Hair covers just about the entire body. • The hair on your head keeps in your body warmth. Which is why it is important to wear a hat in the winter time. You could lose up to 80% 0f your body heat through your head. • It also prevents exposure to UV light. • Hair follicles are the source of hair growth • Finger & toe nails grow from a nail root.

  8. Skin problems • Acne occurs when the hair follicle is blocked by dead skin cells. • Bacteria and oil build up causing pus pockets. • Hives occurs when the body responds to an allergic reaction. The body releases a histamine which causes blood vessels to open. • Taking Benadryl reverses it. Benadryl is an anti-histamine

  9. In class now • Parents (and students), what is the largest organ in the body? What function(s) does it serve? • The answer is your skin. Yes it is an organ. • The skin (hair, & nails) serve as a barrier to prevent infection, keep one warm (think about getting a short hair cut), produces vitamin D, and collects information for the brain to analyze and react (the skin will sense the heat or cold). • We will be making the connection between genetics and certain types of skin conditions such as cancer / melanoma • The first type, Basal Cell Carcinoma, the next two are forms of Melanoma (the second one was an extreme case) and finally, hives (caused by an allergic reaction to something)

  10. The Heart • What is the purpose of doing CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation) on a person who appears to be having a heart attack? • The purpose is to pump fresh oxygenated blood around to all the organs with a special focus on the heart & the brain.
