SCOPE OF EFFORT • Survey Recreational Users of • Lake Pontchartrain • Lake Borgne • Passes Area • Louisiana Portion of Mississippi Sound • All Recreational Users are Surveyed at Lake Access Points • Emphasis is on Recreational Fishing • Survey Period is April through October 2008
SURVEYS OF LAKE USERS • Statistically Significant Survey Determining Gross Change in Use Patterns • Questions Regarding Historical Use Patterns and Future Use Intentions • Questions Regarding Quality of Experience • Questions Regarding Fish Caught Before and After Spillway Opening (Type of Fish and Quantity of Fish)
SURVEYS ATLAKE ACCESS POINTS • Includes People Fishing off Piers and the Lakeshore • Not All Access Points are Used Solely to Access the Study Area • 325 Surveys Have Been Completed to date with 25% of Survey Days Complete • 80% of Users Surveyed were Fishing/Crabbing • Limited to Lake Users Still Using the Lakes
OTHER IMPACTS ON RECREATIONAL FISHING • Weather Conditions Were Not Favorable While the Spillway was Open • Fuel Costs have Reduced Recreational Fishing • Lack of Live Bait (shrimp)
PRELIMINARY RESULTS • Has Your Use of Lake Pontchartrain/Borgne Changed Since the Spillway Opened? • Three-Fourths of all 325 Lake Users Say No • Three-Fourths of the 214 People Fishing Say No • Three-Fourths of the 45 People Crabbing Say No • Three-Fourths of the 249 Lake Pontchartrain Users Say No • Half of the 44 Boaters Using Areas Outside the Study Area Say No
