This lesson from St. Aidan’s High School explores the importance of tactics in activities like badminton. Tactics involve the strategies we use to play effectively, based on our strengths and weaknesses as well as those of our opponents. Using badminton as an example, the text describes how an attacking player can choose specific tactics—such as different serving techniques—based on their abilities and the response of their opponent. It emphasizes the need to adapt tactics during the game for improved performance based on ongoing assessments.

What are Tactics? • Tactics are the way in which we carry out particular strategies during activities. • The tactics that we choose to use during games are done so for two reasons. • 1.As a team/individual I have identified my strengths/weaknesses and chosen a tactic that suits them. • The tactic that we have chosen is based on our opponents strengths and weaknesses.
Badminton Example of Tactics • Activity: Badminton • I am an attacking player during badminton and have a powerful smash. • Through observing my strengths I chose the tactic of always using a low serve. • This will hopefully force my opponent to lift the shuttle into the air allowing me to have a greater chance to work to my strengths and perform the smash shot.
Reason for changing my starting tactic. • Activity: Badminton • During the match I re-evaluated my strengths/weaknesses and my opponents strengths/weaknesses. • I found that my original tactic was not successful as my opponent continually played a tight net shot from my low serve. I changed my tactic from starting with a low serve to using a high serve which will hopefully encourage my opponent to play an overhead clear allowing me to smash.
