  2. Classification • Kingdom – Animalia • Phylum – Cnidaria

  3. Basic Characteristics • Radial symmetry • Examples: corals, hydra, jelly fish, sea anemones • Single opening surrounded by tentacles

  4. Basic Characteristics (cont.) • No mesoderm tissue • Body types (some exhibit both body types during life cycle) • Polyp – vase shape (like anemone) • Opening on dorsal surface and tentacles up • Medusa – umbrella shape (like jellyfish) • Mouth on ventral surface and tentacles down

Basic Characteristics (cont.) • Carnivores • Have stinging cells (cnidocytes) which sting prey • Are poisonous • Contain a capsule called a nematocyst that contains the stinging barb in a coiled tube • Sting prey & tentacles bring to mouth • Lining of gastrovascular cavity secretes enzymes to break down food • Undigested food leaves through the mouth

  6. Basic Characteristics (cont.) • Reproduction – both sexual and asexual • Diversity – most live as individual animals • Three classes • Hydrozoa – both body forms together (Portuguese Man of War) • Scyphozoa – mostly medusa form (jellyfish) • Anthozoa – only polyp form (sea anemones & corals)
