CC.2.4.2.A.6 Extend the concepts of addition and subtraction to problems involving length. 1.2.2.C Identify essential and nonessential information within and across a variety of texts.

GOALS FOR UNDERSTANDING: Through practice with a four-step key strategy for solving word problems, students will: • Identify/determine the helpful information given within a word problem • Recognize and define what information is being asked of them to find • Select and justify the use of addition or subtraction operations to solve the word problem • Write a number sentence supportive of their determined ‘answer’

  10. How much did these two skaters skate altogether? Tony Hawk ‘Happie’ the Goat Happie is in the Guiness Book of World Records. She skateboarded 118 ft. Tony skateboarded 317 ft. down a street in San Francisco. He made 17 video games. Watch me! VS.

  11. How many slam dunks in all? Kobe Bryant Asian Elephant Asian Elephant made 22 slam dunks in 2014. He also made a 360° slam. (Watch me!) This year Kobe made 9 slam dunks. He made 2 more dunks this week. One was a 360° slammer. VS.
