Understanding Osmosis and Diffusion: Key Vocabulary for Science

This resource introduces the essential vocabulary of osmosis and diffusion for your SNB glossary. Diffusion refers to the movement of molecules from regions of higher concentration to lower concentration, while osmosis specifically describes the diffusion of water through a membrane. Molecules are in constant motion, spreading evenly throughout a space until equilibrium is reached. Understanding these concepts is crucial for grasping how substances move in liquids and gases, illustrated by examples like spraying perfume.

  1. Osmosis and Diffusion

  2. Add these vocabulary to your SNB glossary • diffusion - movement of molecules from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration. • osmosis - diffusion of water through a membrane.

  3. Molecules move CONSTANTLY • Diffusion is the movement of molecules from crowded areas to less crowded areas • *Particles diffuse in liquid and gases. • Example: spraying perfume • Equilibrium is when the molecules are spread evenly in a space • *Molecules continue to move and equilibrium is maintained

  4. Osmosis is the diffusionof water through a membrane. • Water molecules move from where there are lotsto where there are little • When this transfer of water in and out of the cell is moving at the same rate you have Equilibrium
