  1. Respiratory System By: Stephen Austin

  2. Primary Functions • Exchange gases between the atmosphere and the blood. • Homeostatic regulation of pH through the regulation of CO2 • Protection from inhaled pathogens and irritating substances • Vocalization.

  3. How It Works • The Respiratory system begins with the nose. The nose is the body's filtering system. The nose filters dirt and other particles that shouldn’t get inside the body. The nose is also a humidification system so that the lungs don't dry out.

  4. How It Works Con… • The mouth and trachea come next. Food goes down the esophagus into the stomach, air goes down the trachea into the lungs.

  5. How It Works Con… • Next the lungs come in place. This is where all the air exchange takes place. The air goes into the lungs this is where the gas exchange takes place. The lung tissue is full of blood vessels. The oxygen gets dropped off by the lungs into the blood vessels while at the same time picking up the carbon dioxide. You exhale to get rid of the carbon dioxide and inhale to get the oxygen from the air into the body.

  6. Partners • The respiratory system inhales the oxygen needed for the body and brings it into the lungs where it is transported through the lungs into the blood stream. The circulatory system carries the oxygenated blood throughout the body where oxygen is exchange for carbondioxidewhich is carried back to the lungs where it is exhaled into the atmosphere.

  7. Crazy Facts • Each minute, you breath in about 13 pints of air • Cold weather doesn’t have anything to do with having a cold. Its because your inside more, and around others. When they sneeze cough and even breath their germs get in the air and your more likely to breathe them in.
