  2. When dividing fractions, rewrite the problemas a multiplication. • Multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second fraction. • A reciprocal is also called a multiplicative inverse. • A number times its reciprocal equals 1.

  3. Example #1: 1 • Multiply by the reciprocal. • Cancel. 2 • Multiply across, • then simplify.

  4. Example #2: A whole number can be written as a fraction over 1. 2 • Multiply by the reciprocal. • Cancel. 1 • Multiply across.

  5. Example #3: • Change mixed numbers to improper fractions. -3 • Multiply by the reciprocal. -1 1 2 • Cancel. • Multiply across, then simplify.

  6. Example #4: • Remember, the fraction bar means divide. • Multiply the numerator by the reciprocal of the denominator. 3 2 • Cancel. • Multiply across.

  7. Remember, the fraction bar means divide. Example #5: • Change mixed numbers to improper fractions. -7 • Multiply the numerator by the reciprocal of the denominator. 2 • Cancel. • Multiply across, then simplify.

  8. Example #6: A box of Yummy Crunchers cereal contains 15 ⅗ ounces of cereal. If a bowl holds 2 ⅖ ounces of cereal, how many bowls of Yummy Crunchers are in the box? Each box of Yummy Crunchers contains 6 ½ bowls of cereal.
