  2. How many countries in the world? Why is this a hard question to answer? The UN has 193 member nations (as of 2011) Canada was one of the original 51 members in 1945 Switzerland didn’t join until 2002 Which country was the most recent member? South Sudan (2011) Is this everyone? Palestine and The Holy See (The Pope) permanent observer status, but not officially member states.

Three Worlds Developed in the 1950’s, based on economic development and political system; Cold War era • First World (developed core) - capitalist countries • UK, Canada, USA, Japan etc. • Second World – communist countries • USSR (Russia and satellites), China, Poland, Cuba • Third World – same as two-world “periphery” • Not involved in WWII, under-developed
