  2. Agenda • SSR Book Your Desk Do Now Archaeologists! Today we will be studying the world’s first found written code of laws, Hammurabi’s Code. 1. What is the job/duty of an archaeologist like yourself? 2. Which category of SPICE does this code of law fall into? 3. Why does it go in that category? 4. Why might this artifact be important to an archaeologist? Explain your answer in a minimum of five sentences. {In Your Notes}

MOW 601 - Power: Determine the appropriate meaning of words, phrases, or statement from figurative or somewhat technical contexts Greeter SWBAT Describe the political legacy of Hammurabi’s Code and analyze the relationship between Hammurabi’s Code and social structure. Big Idea • Hammurabi's Code was the first ever written set of laws. It laid the foundation for all written laws to come, including biblical laws and the U.S. Constitution. HW Unit 2 – Community/Civilization Day 19 • HW9: Hammurabi Precepts (Due Wednesday) • AoW5: Greece and The Golden Dawn

Hammurabi Partner Read (15M) • You will work with a SINGLE partner (not a group, not your table…1 SINGLE person). • You will take turns reading the information presented in the handout CW17A: Hammurabi Background. • Complete the “Stop &…” questions as you go along. • If you have questions, consult with your partner FIRST before raising your hand. 

(1M) • You have been provided with a colorful handout of several of Hammurabi’s precepts. • Your task is to work with the team of people that have the same color to translate Hammurabi’s code, give it meaning, and draw conclusions based on evidence. • Should you finish early, KEEP IT SPICEy! • You now have 45 seconds to move SILENTLY (that’s your warning), find the people with your color, sit at a table together quietly and wait for the instructor to start the timer. • Go!

  6. Found your seat? Great. (15M) • You now have 15 minutes to translate your precepts.

  7. Precepts Translated? (15) • It’s time to use those creative skills to create a skit that shows two of the precepts that your team translated. Skits MUST be under 2 minutes each. We DO have an exit ticket to get to ya’know… ;)

  8. The Before You Exit Ticket Pull the half sheet in front of you and complete before being dismissed.

  10. Agenda • SSR Book Your Desk Do Now Start a KWL chart about Ancient Greece. Combine all of the knowledge you already have from World Literature and all the things you want to learn about Greece in the next two weeks.

MID 601 Power: Infer the main idea or purpose of more challenging passages or their paragraphs Greeter • SWBAT compare and contrast Ancient Greece with early Sumerian culture. • SWBAT describe the features of democratic government in classical Athens. Big Idea Mesopotamia may have been the first civilization, but every civilization shares the 7 characteristics. It’s time to move forward in time!   13. It’s all Greek to me… (NOTES!) (10) • We’ll be skipping over some of the early Greek history to get to the more interesting stuff! • So, here’s what you need to know: • Greece had formed a system of separate city-states • QUICK  What’s a city-state? • Each city-state had its own laws, rulers, and culture – we’ll look at ATHENS today • They established a system of democracy

  16. 7 Characteristics • Fill in the L section of your chart! What did you learn from the reading and video? • Once you have great notes, start to trace the characteristics of civilization using what you know about Ancient Greece. • If you finish, KEEP IT SPICEy: Begin a compare and contrast between Greece and Mesopotamia on the back of CW15!

  17. Homework • HW10 asks you to read and think about the geography of Ancient Greece. You need to read the selection and annotate it. Answer all the “Stop & …” questions as you go!

Big Idea The Greeks LOVED democracy, but so do we! This form of central government (7 characteristics) and political system (SPICE) is what we still use in the U.S. today!   21. POP QUIZ Get out a blank sheet of paper and something to write with and answer this question: • What are the 7 characteristics of all civilizations? • What does the acronym SPICE represent/stand for? • What does the acronym SOAPSTone represent/stand for?

D-E-M-O-C-R-A-C-Y! • Democracy comes from the Greek word demos • Demos means people… democracy is rule by the people… get it? • Athenians were really proud of their democracy • Today we’re going to learn how they got that democracy and also what life was like for an Athenian in the time of Pericles.

  25. Document-Based Questions • Look at the engraving and the selection from one of Pericles’ most famous speeches. • Read the speech independently and then answer the questions that follow.

  26. Daily Life in Athens • Now, you’re going to read about what life was like for different groups of people in Athens. You’ll read about either • Women • Children • Aristocrats • Freemen • Slaves • THEN, you will write a journal entry, poem, or song that describes the experience from that perspective.
