Structure of a pancreas A fish-shaped spongy greyish-pink organ about 6 inches long Stretches across the back of the abdomen, behind the stomach Connected to the duodenum Produces pancreatic juice, extend to the left side of the body Produce hormones , insulin which controls the amount of glucose in human body Glucagon – raises the level of glucose(sugar) in the body Motostatin – regulate the secretion of glucagons and insulin

  4. Absorption and digestion of food in the pancreas • Pancreas secretes digestive juices • They are the maltase, lipase and protease enzyme • Enzyme break down the food into smaller particles • Thus the diffusion of the food particles into the bloodstream through the villi is made efficient

  5. Enzymes secreted by the pancreas • Amylase changes starch into maltose • Trypsin changes protein into polypeptides • Lipase changes fats into fatty acids and glycerols

  6. What happens if the pancreas malfunctions • Lack of insulin resulting in digestive problem • Pancreatic diseases, e.g.pancreatitis,diabetes mellitus, exocrine panreatic insufficiency.

  7. Can we live without a pancreas??YES!!! • Yes, we can still live a full live without a pancreas. However, the moment u lose it, you will become an immediate Type 1 diabetic. The pancreas creates insulin. Without it, you must take insulin injections for the rest of your life.
