  1. Accelerator Engineering Resources Mu2e WGM 19 January 2011 S. Werkema Mu2e Accelerator L2 Manager

  2. Minimum AD Resources Required to make Progress toward CD-1 Mu2e RF Systems Mu2e RF is ~$5M part of the project. It warrants serious attention • Need a physicist or senior engineer to serve as level 3 manager for Mu2e RF systems • RF Engineer to help complete BOEs (~2 weeks) • Joe Dey (AD/RF) has been helping with beam loading calculations and some high level design • Dave Peterson (AD/Pbar) has made a good start on the RF BOEs • Mechanical Engineer to help complete BOEs for cavity systems (~1 week) Rings & Transport to rings • Mechanical Engineer to help complete BOEs for kickers and septa, mechanical and vacuum systems (~1 week) • Joel Misek (AD/Mech) had been helping but he was VSOed • Electrical Engineer to help complete BOEs for kickers and magnet power supplies (~1 week) • Chris Jensen (AD/EE) is a kicker expert and has helped us start the conceptual design work • George Krafczyk is EE liaison to Mu2e S. Werkema - Mu2e WGM

  3. Minimum AD Resources Required to make Progress toward CD-1 Resonant Extraction • Electrical Engineer to help complete BOEs for magnet power supplies (~0.5 week) External Beamline • Mechanical engineering (~2 weeks) • BOEs for vacuum system, magnet stands and installation • Electrical engineering (~1 week) • BOEs for magnet system power supplies Target Station • Mechanical engineering (~2 weeks) • RAL STFC and Bartoszek engineering have recently started work on the production target and the PS heat and radiation shield. It will be some time before they are ready to give credible BOEs • Target dump (absorber) has no engineering attention at the moment • Need and ME to coordinate resource estimates required for CD-1 • Ultimately need a FNAL ME to take charge of target station mechanical issues • Patrick Hurh, Salman Tariq, and Curtis Baffes are the AD/Mech engineers most familiar with Mu2e target station issues S. Werkema - Mu2e WGM

  4. General Comments • Summary of estimates: ME(6 weeks), EE(2.5 weeks), RF(2 weeks) • These engineering support estimates are my crude estimate of what we need to complete a credible conceptual design for CD-1 – nothing more • Even with this help we will not make Ron’s deadlines for completion of resource estimates • This is only the beginning. We will need significant, stable support for the engineering design work required for CD-2 • Engineers will balk (already have) at being asked to make cost and resource estimates for systems that have not had much serious engineering design work • g-2 muon: they will directly compete with Mu2e for AD engineering resources. S. Werkema - Mu2e WGM
