  2. Judaism • Although only .2% of people in the world are Jewish, Judaism has served as a foundation for Christianity and Islam which are the first and second largest religions

  3. Abraham- founder, made covenant with God Hebrew people moved from Ur to Canaan around 1800 B.C.E. Hebrew migrate to Egypt Moses leads Exodus out of Egypt 1200-1300 B.C.E. Hebrew People

  4. Originally 12 tribes in Canaan but, only one tribe remains, Judah; Hebrew religion called Judaism From 1020 to 922 B.C. Hebrews (Jews) unite; new kingdom called Israel Saul Drives out Philistines to the North David Unites Israelites and establishes Jerusalem as capital Solomon Makes Israel trading empire Builds magnificent temple and palace in Jerusalem The Kingdom of Israel

The Kingdom Divides • High taxes and forced labor lead Jews in north to revolt • By 922 B.C. kingdom divides in two—Israel in north, Judah in south • 200 years of conflict follow • Conquered by many other civilizations –Assyrians, Babylonians, Romans, etc. • Jewish Diaspora under Romans 2nd c. A.D. • Jewish religion continues, but no Jewish civilization • Jewish nation of Israel formed in 1948

  7. Judaism- major beliefs • Hebrews are monotheists, believing in one all powerful God only—Yahweh • Moral behavior- Promised to obey God and God will protect them • Follow Jewish law- Based on 10 Commandment, strict laws with mercy

  8. Judaism important texts • Hebrew bible- origins, laws, stories, history • includes Torah (first five books of Hebrew Bible) • Talmud- Jewish law and explanations of Jewish law
