  1. Week 4 – NFPA 13: Area Design Calculations

  2. 1. Area Protected by each sprinkler • A= S x L Where: • A = area covered by the sprinkler, in square feet • S = distance between sprinklers on the branch lines, in feet • L = Distance between branch lines

  3. 2.Determine the Number of Branch Lines • Number of Branch Lines = (Width of Bay)/(Lmax) Where: • Lmax = max allowable distance between sprinklers • Smax=max allowable distance between sprinklers

  4. 3. Determine the Distance Between Branch Lines • L = (Total width of bay) / (Number of branch lines)

  5. 4. Determine the Maximum allowable distance between sprinklers • A = S x L • S = A/L

  6. 5. Determine the minimum number of sprinklers on each branch line • Sprinklers on branch line = (total length of bay) / (Max. distance between sprinklers)

  7. 6. Determine the Actual Distance between Sprinklers (Sactual) • Sactual = (total length of bay) / (number of sprinklers on line)

  8. 7. Verify Sprinkler Coverage • Verify at this time that the actual square foot limitation is in accordance with NFPA 13.

  9. Example • 75 foot by 50 foot warehouse with branch lines running parallel to the 75 ft side. • Ordinary Hazard

  10. Example (cont) • Area max (Amax)as per sprinkler per NFPA 13 (Table 8.6.2.2.1): Ordinary Hazard System = 130 ft2, Lmax=15 ft • # of branch lines=width/Lmax= 50 ft/15ft=3.33, rounded up to 4 • Distance between branch lines: L=total width/# branch lines=50 ft/4=12.5 ft • Distance to walls = 12.5/2 = 6.25 ft • S=A/L = 130 ft2 / 12.5 ft  S= 10.4 ft • Min # of sprinklers on each branch line = (total length of bay)/(max distance between sprinklers)= 75 ft/10.4ft=7.21 sprinklers = 8 sprinklers • Sactual=total length/#of sprinklers on line = 75 ft/8sprinklers = 9.375 feet • Total # of sprinklers = 4 x 8 = 32 sprinklers • Verify sprinkler coverage • A=S x L = 9.375 ft x 12.5 ft = 117.2 ft2

  11. Example - Final Layout • 32 sprinkler, 4 branch lines, 8 sprinklers/branch line
