God the son • The Scriptures present the Lord Jesus Christ as being at the same time perfectly human and perfectly divine. • Because of this, He was both like and unlike other men. • Jesus was revealed to be a man among men who was born, who lived, who suffered, and who died. John 1:14 1 Timothy 3:16 Hebrews 2:14-17

God the son • Scripture is equally clear He was unlike man in that • He was eternally preexistent, • He was entirely sinless in His human life, • His death was a sacrifice for the sins of the whole world, and • He manifested His divine power in His glorious resurrection and ascension. • On the human side, He had a beginning and was conceived by the Holy Spirit and was born of the Virgin Mary. • On the divine side, He had no beginning because He was from all eternity.

God the son • In Isaiah 9:6 the prediction was given, For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. • The distinction is obvious between a child who was born and a Son who was given. • In like manner, it is stated in Galatians 4:4 But when the fulness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, • Accordingly, the eternal Son became in His incarnation "born of a woman."

  5. God the son • The eternity and deity of Jesus is established by two lines of revelation: • direct statements • implications from Scripture.

God the son Direct Statements of the Eternity and Deity of the Son of God • The eternity and deity of Jesus Christ are asserted in an extensive body of Scripture which affirms His infinite person and His eternal existence coequal with the other persons of the Godhead. • This fact is not affected by His incarnation. • Although Jesus was a child born, He was also given as a Son and is specifically called "the mighty God." John 1:1-2 Micah 5:2 Isaiah 7:14 Isaiah 9:6-7

God the son Direct Statements of the Eternity and Deity of the Son of God • When Christ stated in John 8:58, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am," the Jews understood this to be a claim for deity and eternity. compare • In John 17:5, Christ in His prayer stated, "And now, glorify Thou Me together with Thyself, Father, with the glory which I had with Thee before the world was. compare John 13:3 Exodus 3:14 Isaiah 43:1

God the son Direct Statements of the Eternity and Deity of the Son of God • Philippians 2:6-7 states that Christ was "in the form of God" before His incarnation. • A more explicit statement is made in Colossians 1:15-19 where Jesus Christ is declared to be before all creation, the Creator Himself, and the express image of the invisible God. • In 1 Timothy 3:16, Jesus Christ is declared to be "God . . . manifest in the flesh."

  23. 1. Contrast the evidence for the human and the divine natures of Christ. On the human side, He had a beginning and was conceived by the Holy Spirit and was born of the Virgin Mary. On the divine side, He had no beginning because He was from all eternity. 2. What are some of the evidences for the eternity of the Son of God? 3. How does the eternity of God prove His deity? Only God is eternal, so as the many evidences presented state that He is from eternity, He is therefore God. Micah 5:2 Isaiah 7:14 John 1:1-2 Colossians 1:15-19 John 8:58

  24. 4. What additional implications are there from His works that the Son of God is eternal? All creation is ascribed to Christ, therefore He existed before anything was created. 5. How do the works of the Son of God prove His deity? Throughout the Old Testament He appeared to man as an angel or as a man impacting their lives as God. He even fought for His people, Israel. Colossians 1:16 John 1:3

His titles relate Him to the Old Testament revelation of Jehovah-God, and the New Testament names of the Son of God are associated with the Father and the Spirit as being equal with them. 7. How is the eternity of Christ supported by His other attributes? He is said to be self-existent, immutable, holiness, eternity, to name just a few of his attributes found in scripture.

  26. 8. How do the attributes of Christ prove His deity? These same attributes are ascribed to both God, the Father and to God, the Holy Spirit. 9. How important to our Christian faith is the doctrine of the deity and eternity of Jesus Christ? If Jesus Christ is not deity and eternal, than our Christian faith is in vain.
