  3. Themes Kidulthood Racism and stereotyping: Common theme of social realism meant to make you open your eyes to what is happening around you. Living in rough areas. Per pressure/Teenage pregnancy: Making tough decision you don’t want to make or are too young to. Dirty pretty things- Themesof moral relativism: Acts morally. Its morally wrong to take someone's organ illegally however you need the money to live. Makes you question yourself. Billy Elliot- Themes Peer Pressure To keep care of his nan at her age with Billy being very young is hard on the boy, As he must grow up sooner. Social labels His father and brother are both hardworking miners which is a ‘tough man’ label to dance would make Billy seem disgraceful in their eyes because of these labels placed on them. Influences from cultures: The main protagonist is An immigrate although Different culture and Ethnic background you Feel more understanding to his view Characters criminal status and behaviour.

  4. Setting Stereotypical social realist movie setting in Kidulthood aka flats and counselling estate area. (urban areas) Showing that these situation happen in these areas you might not live in. The main setting /location for Kidulthood is in the city a very busy place we all know very well another place you think you should feel safe in because of the mass amount of people but you are not. Billy Elliot is set in a town rural however still holds the key aspects of Social Realism as they live in a ‘poor condition’ with many people living in a small accommodation. Unable to cope after the death of the mum. School is another setting in Kidulthood it is a place were you think you should feel safe. However in ‘reality’ even the adults appear afraid of the children and uninterested in helping the kids being bullied in the movie you see no adult coming to help in any of the situation. Most turn a blind eye from what's happened even some stop to stare and do nothing. In a scene in the film the 3 coloured main actors go into a store which appears posh and mainly out of their ‘price range’. This is to contrast with the characters and show how out of place they are and make the audience feel uncomfortable. The setting of the film is shot during the strikes on mining and riots against the police therefore it creates a tense atmosphere for the young boy wanting to learn to dance in that type of ‘manly’ man society. Which category miners tend to place themselves into.

  5. Characters Dirty Little Pretty things- Social realist creates the sense that these specific groups are heroic and you sympathize with them. For example in Dirty pretty things the main character who is an illegal immigrate is forced into doing things in which he doesn't want to do. Like preform illegal surgery on other immigrates or he will be given to the police. In Kidulthood the characters are put into dilemmas where they have to make decisions to do things that they don’t or is morally wrong however they do not have the choice this is common in social realism movies. The do not have the power they do like characters do in mainstream films/ society. Stereotypically the main characters are ‘black’ and they are shown to be rough and constantly getting into trouble throughout the film. The are also shown threatening and it is to symbolises how we place people into groups this is shown also when the security man follows the boys in the store and then accuses them of stealing a hat which they didn't. Only because they are dark skinned, another way this is shown is when one boy is unable to get a taxi because of his skin colour. This is similar in Dirty Pretty things as the main characters are both illegal immigrates and other characters are also asylum seekers. The film represents the hardships of being an illegal immigrate. Narrative of most social realist films mainly focus on certain groups in society these groups involve groups which suffer hardships in society and racist injustice towards them, they can also be faced with economic difficulties and how this affects their life and creates a struggle to live in society. The idea of alcohol and drugs and peer pressure is shown through the characters the quote that strongly expresses that in Kidulthood is “could have stuck up for her” being the girl who killed herself after getting bullied. “Narrative commonly shown through disruption that happens in film.” –Nick Lacey In Kidulthoodthe disruption is the 15 year olds behaviour in that environment.. The small boy for the film billy Elliot is shunned to do something he loves because of the stereotypical view of the female and male sex. However he embraces what he loves, even if his parents disapprove. Main character normally has heroic characteristics for example immigrate from Dirty Pretty things who tries to save a man after he got a wound infection, although it was dangerous for him. Stereotypical yet in Some cases can be Realistic of a situation people can get themselves into for example a girl constantly bullied mentally and physically decides to commit suicide is a realistic view on the world and its deep because through the characters many do not care and are selfish.

  6. Camerawork Seeing through the camera unfocused is a camera skill also used when showing the characters intoxicated it makes the audience feel uncomfortable. Establishing shots used to show the setting they are in which is commonly a city in social realism. Using handheld method in filming with the camera is also a common aspect of social realism its shows most of its effectiveness in scenes like in Kidulthood when the teenage girls are under the influence of drugs and the scenes of tension/ running. POV camera shot is commonly used in social realism as it allows the audience to see how the character sees therefore letting the audience get a sense of the characters emotions in the scene which is a common aspect of ‘social realism;’. This idea can be found in many shots to allow the audience to feel as the character does. Long takes in scenes of awkward and dangerous moments to add suspense and keep the audience excited. Close up shots used to create tension and show emotion.

  7. Normal diegetic sounds used which is common in social realism. For example; cars, foot steps , trains , shouting etc. Editing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Kd6iT9x9to At beginning it shows the way silence and added non diegetic sound can create a atmosphere. Simple continuity editing demonstrates realism using editing. As it tries to exact a simple pace as ‘realistically’ as possible. HOWEVER in some cases scenes can be used to fasten the pace to make viewer seem uncomfortable. This is also a method used in scenes of violence and action in social realism. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7vjqTA70OE Another non diegetic sound used good was the background music during intimate scenes.

  8. Similarities shown in each of these films is the idea of peer pressure in society these days that leads us to make life haunting decisions if its taking drugs, going for your ambitions or doing things to save the woman you love. Another similarity shown between these three movies I have analysed is the aspect of some antagonist trying to prevent them from being happy too. In Kidulthood and Dirty pretty things it is more violence based physically however Billy Elliot it is more emotionally although he is still bullied because of his differences.
