The Race to Discovery • The Line of Demarcation – All lands East of this line went to Portugal, all lands West went to Spain. • Spain won out on that deal. • The Treaty of Todesillas was signed as a result, moving the line 700 miles West • England refused to follow either • Spain & Portugal wanted to claim land by placing a flag, where England believed you had to colonize
Hernando DeSoto • Spanish explorer. • 1540 led an expedition into GA. • First European to set foot in GA. • DeSoto & his men kept records of their journey & drew a map. • Considered the end of the prehistoric period and beginning of historic period in GA.
Spanish Missions • The Spanish attempted to setter the area of Georgia by building missions. • Guale & Mocama were the names of these missions. • They were not successful.
