  1. Clear Fiber and Wave Guide Fab. Makoto YOSHIDA (Osaka Univ.) July 14-17 MICE FT workshop @FNAL

  2. Components(5 SciFi stations in multiplex case) • SciFi station <-> Service hole on flange • 18 holes/connector x 12 connector/plane x 3 planes/station x 5 stations = 3240 clear fibers (+ 360 connectors) • Flange <-> VLPC cassette • 18 holes/connector x 12 connector/plane x 3 planes/station x 5 stations = 3240 clear fibers (+ 180 connectors) • 3240/126 = 26 D0 connectors • 26/8 = 4 VLPC cassette D0 connector

  3. Clear Fiber • Kuraray round-type multi-clad s-type • cladding size: 6% of diameter • tolerance of diameter: 2.5% (at 3s) • Diameter : 0.35 mm x 3 = 1.05 mmf • 7-SciFi-Multiplexed layout • Costs: 2$/m??? • (2m+4m)x6480x2$/m=78,000$

  4. Waveguide Fabrication • trial to glue clear fibers on connector • REPIC • reinforcement by plastic tube • CI Industry • polishing contact face REPIC

  5. Polishing Contact Face diamond machine & polishing optical cement epoxy glue

  6. Test items for clear fiber • w/o VLPC in Japan • Light shielding • Dead channel (Construction efficiency) • Attenuation in fiber • 2m / 4m / 6m • Multiplex feasibility • 1.05mmF / 0.35mmF • Transmission at contact face of 18-hole connector • long term bending test • w/ VLPC in FLNAL • Uniformity (accuracy of fiber alignment) • Light yield in SciFi • Noise from RF

  7. Prototype for September test 1.05mmF x 4m D0 connector 1.05 mmF x 18 x7 3.5 views 42x18x4m=3024m VLPC cassette x6 x7 (7 views 84x18x4m=6048m) 1.05mmF x 2m fiber will be shielded by ZipperTube 1.05mmF x 6m 1.05mmF x 2m intermediate fibers x3 0.35mmF x 4m 0.35 mmF x 126

  8. Schedule • Clear fibers will be delivered by the end of July (7/21) • Assembling of fibers will be done before the middle of August. • Basic tests (quality, alignment, attenuation) will be finished and waveguides will be shipped to FNAL in August. Proposal for mass-production • CI Industry can produce 18-hole opt. connector by machining (not molded). • Easy to control quality. • Cost: 20,000$ / 2000 connectors • sampling test of clear fiber • measure diameter to determine margin of connecter hole • change SciFi diameter : 0.350  0.300 mmF • avoid loss at connectors • smaller modify on D0 connector • to fit diameter of fibers between D0 connector and VLPC
