Job Performance Requirement 7-6

The backward swim technique is crucial for firefighters when navigating tight spaces with an SCBA. Start by sitting with your back against the wall and ensuring the SCBA is centered between the obstacles. Position your feet forward and raise your buttocks off the ground. This foundational position is key to success. Pull your shoulders and elbows inward while pushing backward. Once the SCBA cylinder neck clears the wall stud, execute a swimming maneuver to rotate your body and complete the passage through the obstacle safely and effectively.

  1. Job PerformanceRequirement 7-6 Backwards Swim Technique

  2. A The firefighter sits down with the back against the wall with the SCBA centered between the two obstacles. The firefighter’s feet should be positioned out in front of the body as far as possible with the buttocks raised off the ground. This is the key to this technique working.

  3. B The firefighter then pulls shoulders and elbows inward toward the center of the body while pushing backwards through the space.

  4. C Once the neck of the SCBA cylinder is clear of the wall stud, the firefighter should rotate the body and employ a “swim” type maneuver to bring the rest of the body through the obstacle.
