  2. Many had a mistaken idea about the law • They followed the little details • But ignored things like love, mercy and justice • Matthew 23:23 • paid tithe of small things • “omitted the weightier matters of the law” • “judgment, mercy and faith” • “these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.”

  3. Hatred between Jews and Samaritans • Death of Solomon - Kingdom Split • Northern kingdom taken into Assyrian captivity • Assyria populated country with other people • Intermarried with the Jews that were left • These people were called SAMARITANS Northern Southern

  4. Questions by the Lawyer • “Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” • Tempting Jesus • Trying to trap him • What is written in the law? That’s Right “So he answered and said,” 'You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,' and 'your neighbor as yourself.” Luke 10:27

  5. Questions by the Lawyer • “Who is my neighbour ?” • Trying to justify himself • Jesus had told him to do what he suggested • Implied that this man was not doing it • Put Jesus on the defensive Jesus Answers with a Parable

  6. The Parable Luke 10:30-32 30. Then Jesus answered and said: "A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. 31. "Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32. "Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side.

  7. The Parable • Man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho • Jerusalem - 2300 ft. above sea level • Jericho - 1300 ft. below sea level • “Way of Blood” • Priest - “passed by on the other side” • Served in temple • Knew what he should do • Levite - Looked but left • Worker in house of God

  8. A Priest passed by Was something expected from him? Yes, of course! He represented the religion in his country!

  9. A Levite also Passes by They were the ones responsible for the temple and the sacrifices..

  10. The Parable Luke 10:33-35 33. "But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. 34. "So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35. "On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, 'Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.'

  11. A Samaritan also Passes by 1. He bandaged his wounds. 2. He puts the wounded man on his own animal. 3. He gives the innkeeper two denarii. 4. He said to the innkeeper: Take care of him and I will repay you when I come back.

  12. The Parable Luke 10:36-37 36. "So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?" 37. And he said, "He who showed mercy on him." Then Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise." The lawyer answered his own question ! Jesus emphasized the doing !

  13. What is Jesus trying to teach us in this parable? We have to love our neighbor.

  14. Some lessons from the parable... Jesus said that: “A neighbor is one in need whom we can help”. The love for the neighbor does not know color, race or religion.

  15. Some lessons from the parable... Of the three passers-by, the first two should have been the first to help. When we separate our neighbors from our religion is when we become hypocrites... James 1:22, 27

  16. Some lessons from the parable... The cost of compassion... 1. The willingness to cross social barriers The Samaritan did it. What about us ? John. 4:9

  17. 2. The willingness to take the risks. The Samaritan took a great risk by stopping to help somebody that despised him... What if the robbers were still near by? What about us? Luke 6:30

  18. 3. A willingness to set aside our busy "schedules" The Samaritan did it. He was on a journey. What about us, do we have time for our neighbors? Matthew 5:41.

  19. 4. The willingness to make sacrifices. The Samaritan sacrificed more than just time and energy. 1. He used his provisions. 10:34 2. He offered an open-ended agreement to provide for his help. 10:35 What about us?

  20. The Good samaritan Three Philosophies 1. ROBBERS = What is thine is mine 2. PRIEST and LEVITE = What is mine is mine 3. SAMARITAN = What is mine is thine

  21. The Good samaritan Summary Lawyer “What shall I do to inherit eternal life ?” Jesus “How do you answer that ?” Lawyer “Love God…neighbor as our self” Jesus “Correct” Lawyer “Who is my neighbor Jesus Parable of Good Samaritan

  22. The Good samaritan Main Lesson • Eternal life is to be enjoyed by those who • Love God Supremely, and who • Love their neighbor as their self
