  1. Lighthouse Mission Ministries By Molly Anderson, Joe Davis, Joy Florendo, Olivia Sund, Megan Taylor, and Veronica Kieft

  2. Mission Statement For the glory of God, Lighthouse Mission Ministries desires to minister to needy men, women, and children through the provision of compassionate resources and services in the Name of Jesus Christ.

  3. Mission's overall objectives are: 1) To lovingly proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the economically and spiritually impoverished 2) To demonstrate our compassion by responding to basic physical and emotional needs 3) To promote Christian growth as characterized by a productive, changed life 4) To raise the resources of volunteer help, prayer support, money, in-kind gifts, and long-term follow-up from churches and the community as an evangelical ministry

  10. Issues which result in homelessness generally are: • Post-traumatic stress syndrome • lack of finances due to drug use, gambling, marital change, health costs • being stranded while traveling • domestic violence • life-dominating problems such as addictions • emotional health issues • legal problems and many, many others.

  11. Agape Home for Women & Children • Established in 1973 • It's purpose is to provide emergency shelter and transitional housing for homeless women and single women with children • The women at Agape Home are involved in daily routines including household chores and job searches.

  13. "I was able to change my life with the help and care of the women who worked at the Agape Home. These women are very compassionate and an asset to Agape Home." -Former Guest

  14. From the perspectives of donor relations and fundraising, Rachel Tinnell: "Donor Relations and fundraising are vital to the work that Lighthouse Mission Ministries does in the community. Since we choose to receive no government funding, it is up to our department to raise enough money to support the services Lighthouse Mission provides. A huge part of this is building relationships with our donors and the community; helping them to “get to know” us as an organization while making them feel like they are a part of the work being done at the Mission and Agape Home. Because when it comes down to it, without their generosity and faithful support there would be no services."

  15. From the perspective of the Volunteer Coordinator, Jessica Hess: "Sometimes with giving money, it is hard to see that those dollars are working, but when you can be here and personally see the people who are being helped, it becomes real. Our volunteers do things that paid staff don't have time or the resources to do. For example, 10 people spending 4 hours a month to stuff envelopes for our appeal, 3 people serving 2 meals a day, a mentor spending extra time with a guest, or doctors doing eye exams for free. They can save an organization money in this way. Some volunteers are donors too." "Volunteering is also a great way to spread the word about the work we are doing here, because volunteers will see what's going on and share it with their friends and family."

  16. Continued... "Another part of people being able to be involved in the work we are doing here is that it breaks down stereotypes as volunteers see that the homeless are just people, and it could be anyone who ends up being homeless." "My job is to inform volunteers about what we do here at the mission, ensure that all volunteers understand what their conduct should look like, determine if they would be a good fit for the organization, place the volunteer, account for their hours served, and discipline if any problem arises with a volunteer. A large part of what I do is communicating with people who are interested or figuring out scheduling with them."

  25. Perspective of Ron Buchinski, Executive Director *Obtaining Nonprofit status takes a lot of time and PAPERWORK. It can take a whole year and sometimes up to three. *The 990 form acts as the W-2 for the nonprofit. *They're audited every year "We could have the IRS walk in here right now." *It would be stupid to jeopardize the whole mission for $5,000 or something.

  26. *We get no government assistance. It's really important to acknowledge our donors. Have to be accountable with them on where money's going. *2/3 of the budget is spent on staff. We have to consider what benefits we'll have to provide(what will obamacare obligate us to provide?). *The current payroll of the director is more than what the entire women's program was 9 years ago. *It can cost $80-100,000 a year for 2 full time staff members. 40 staff, half are full time. * Experience is important. I worked 8 years in the highest crime rate neighborhood in New York State.

  27. *Women staying at our shelter used to have to give us 70% of their income. “Drowning in Red Ink.” Finally said “NO MORE FEES! Get help and go!” *In the last 9 years, we’ve obtained 3 more properties. We now have 11 college students. *Free health clinic (as compared to others in town which have fees). It can serve 14 people a day and ANYBODY can get examinations (mostly eye exams for glasses). Last year gave away $80,000 in free health care. St. Joe loses $50 million a year in unpaid medical bills.

  28. *The reason employers want to do a business is because they love what they're doing and they want to make enough money in order to pay you, the employee *Main drive an inspiration is to do the work of Jesus Christ in helping those who can't help themselves. Buchinski, R. (2013, May 17). Interview by J Davis []. On managing lighthouse mission.
