  3. What is it? • Derived from the Labour Force Survey estimates • Aggregated • Over 100 tables in B20/20 format • Thousands of cross-classified data series • Covers topics such as • Employment and unemployment • Education • Family characteristics • Industry and occupation data • Wages Labour Force Historical Review - DLI Ontario Training, April 2006

  4. What is it? • Data available from 1976-2005, with current issue, on monthly and annual bases, as well as some seasonally adjusted monthly and 3-month moving average • For older data, consult Historical Statistics of Canada or previous LFS publications • Geographic coverage: national and provincial, with some sub-provincial (Economic Regions and CMAs) for labour force status Labour Force Historical Review - DLI Ontario Training, April 2006

  5. Why should I use it? • Easily spot patterns or trends of the labour market in one file • Changes taken into account across all years • e.g., in 2005 edition, • Adjusted to 2001 Census population counts • Reclassified to the 2002 NAICS and 2001 NOC-S • CMA boundaries based on 2001 Census boundaries • And…it’s easy to use! Labour Force Historical Review - DLI Ontario Training, April 2006

  6. When shouldn’t I use it? • What you see is what you get • Want to do your own analysis? • The cross-tab you need isn’t there? • Need more granularity? So, • Head back to the LFS PUMF • Data aren’t aggregated Labour Force Historical Review - DLI Ontario Training, April 2006

  7. How do I know what I need to know? • That’s right! Read the documentation!! Labour Force Historical Review - DLI Ontario Training, April 2006

  8. How do I know what I need to know? • Definitions • What do they really mean by…? • Changes are documented in section 3 of the Guide (Dictionary of Concepts and Defintions) • Methodology • Population coverage • Approximately 2% of the population is not covered • Residents of the territories, those living on Indian Reserves, full-time members of the Canadian Armed Forces, inmates of institutions • Sample design and size • Provinces  regions within provinces  strata  clusters • Variation in number of households sampled • Sample rotation • Every 6 months 1/6th of the households are out and new ones in Labour Force Historical Review - DLI Ontario Training, April 2006

  9. How do I know what I need to know? • Data Collection • Household change within the 6-month period • Weighting to account for non-responding households • Data Processing • Response data are subjected to edit and imputation processes • When errors or omissions detected, replaced by imputation or logically consistent values • If a value is suspicious but reasonable, it will find its way in • Coding of industry and occupation based on respondent’s job description • Creation of derived variables • Weighting • Seasonal adjustment Labour Force Historical Review - DLI Ontario Training, April 2006

  10. How do I know what I need to know? • Data Quality • Sampling errors • Coefficient of variation (CV) – tables are given or can be calculated with the included CV Calculator • Release criteria • Suppression of estimates falling under a specified level • Changes and Adjustments • Major redesign of the content in 1976 and 1997 • Minor changes in 2005 (as noted above) Labour Force Historical Review - DLI Ontario Training, April 2006
