    1. A reflection on the beatitudes Through the Looking Glass The Basic Teachings of The Catholic Faith June 19, 2007

    3. Beatific vision The contemplation of God in heavenly glory, a gift of God which is a constitutive element of the happiness (or beatitude) of heaven. - CCC glos.

    4. beatitudes The teachings of Jesuson the meaning and way to true happiness. These teachings reflect the promises made to the chosen people since Abraham; they portray the countenance of Christ and describe his charity. Moreover, by shedding light on the actions and attitudes characteristic of the Christian lie, they describe the vocation of all the faithful. - CCC glos.

    5. As we go through the Beatitudes, notice that Jesus emphasized that this way to true happiness was and is now still open to everyone. It does not matter how poor, sick, uneducated, or even unwanted a person may be. This contradicted the Scribes and Pharisees, who taught that poverty or bad health was a punishment and a sign of Gods anger or disfavor.

    7. Spiritual poverty means that we place God above all things, even our material possessions. We do not dwell on what we have or do not have. This is in regards to all of our gifts/talents. We must trust in God completely. We are ready to listen to his words and to follow his call. Our hearts were made to be filled with God. We will be most happy (blessed) when we do become filled with God. We will be so full of the love and life of God (grace) that we will continue to live in his love for all of eternity.

    8. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

    9. One may have sorrow for sin and sorrow for the loss or separation of someone dear to us. Remember that the Holy Spirit if known as the Comforter or Consoler. In our times of sadness, even despair this reminds us that we are NEVER alone. God is with us.

    10. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

    11. Who are the meek? The meek are people who are truly humble they live in truth. They are people who are kind in a loving and selfless way. They receive Gods gifts and listen to how he wants these gifts to be used. Being truly humble the meek understand their gifts come from God and offer thanks.

    12. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.

    13. God will help us to do his will. If we hunger and thirst for what God wants then he will provide us the means to fulfill that desire. When we cooperate with his grace, then his will shall be done! God will be our satisfaction when we desire his will to be in our lives.

    14. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

    15. We have opportunities to show mercy through corporal and spiritual acts of mercy. In giving mercy, we too understand how we are unjust and ungrateful to God. We should imitate Gods love for us. Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.

    16. Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God.

    17. To be pure of heart is to reserve your whole heart for God and his ways. You try to live in a way that is pleasing to him. We must be single-hearted and disciplined in our love of God above all things. We try to not allow sin and earthly desires to enter into our thoughts, hearts, or actions. You put God first in your life and so you will see him in the next.

    18. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of god

    19. It is not just someone who ends a war that is a peacemaker. A peacemaker wants unity for all. A peacemaker tries to remove obstacles that keep us apart from God and each other. A peacemaker will work hard to bring sinners back to God. In this way we are a part Gods family in the communion of saints for we have shared Gods love with others in the world.

    20. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven

    21. If we suffer with Christ, then we share in his resurrection. In uniting ourselves with the sufferings of Christ, we share in his glory. We must always speak the truth and not compromise even when it becomes difficult. God will always give us the courage and strength

    22. Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you (falsely) because of me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven. Thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
