  2. Technology, the U.S. & the world • Technology makes it possible to experience other cultures. • But, our attitudes and habits are not keeping pace with the new technology. • Technological illiteracy. • The “digital divide.” • Provincialism. • Colonialism.

  3. Nationalism • We fail to recognize the impact of world events on our society and lives • We fail to recognize the source of our national problems may be international • Can we understand or accurately interpret world events?

  4. Instantaneous News • What is the impact? • Media color our perception of events. • The number of messages has increased exponentially. • Technical complexity and the skills have become more specialized.

  5. International News Media • An outgrowth of Western Media • Does it lead to Media Imperialism? • The third world relies on the West to find out about themselves and their neighbors • Reporting is as important as the event.

  6. Gathering International News • The U.S. news agencies • Associated Press • United Press International • CNN • The other networks

  8. Gathering International News • Journalism of Exception • The U.S. only reports on events that are “exceptional” – or not normal • We react to unusual events as we do here in the U.S. • We do not report or care about “normal” events

Gathering International News • The U.S. news agencies do not normally station reporters in foreign countries • We go in when a sensational event occurs • Many foreign agencies maintain correspondents in foreign countries permanently • They understand the culture, the politics and the social structure – the context of the events

  10. The dilemma of terrorism • The acts are perpetrated to garner media attention • Does TV coverage encourage terrorism? • “…terrorists are the super-entertainers…”

  11. “The ability to communicate with itself is transforming the African continent.”

  12. Questions. • Will technological innovation only increase the power of the west? • Where does technology come from for the “have nots?” • Will improved communication promote growth and development or new forms of dependence?
