  2. Windows Vista Applications and Tools • Vista offers many new and upgraded applications and tools • Welcome Center • Sidebar • Mail • Contacts • Calendar • Fax and Scan • Meeting Space • Media Player • Media Center • Sideshow • Sync Center • CardSpace

Welcome Center • The Welcome Center launches Automatically after you log into Windows Vista • You can access Welcome Center by • Start>Control Panel>System and Maintenance>Welcome Center • Top of windows displays: • Installed version of Vista • CPU, RAM, Video Card, and Computer Name • Bottom of windows contains: • Getting Started with Windows • Offers from Microsoft • There is also a checkbox at the bottom to select whether you want the Welcome Center to launch with Windows

  5. Windows Sidebar • Displayed on the right side of the desktop by default • Uses Gadgets: • Default

Windows Sidebar • You can Add a gadget by Right Clicking the sidebar and selecting the + in the top right hand corner. • You can Remove a gadget by hovering over the gadget and clicking on the X that will appear in the top right corner. • You can also detach a gadget and move it to your desktop by right clicking on it.

  8. Encryption in Windows Mail • Supports the following encryption algorithms: • Triple Data Encryption Standard (3DES) • 128-bit, 64-bit, and 40-bit Rivest Cipher 2 (RC2) • Data Encryption Standard (DES)

Windows Mail Features • Message Rules (Move, Delete, Forward, Reply) • Automatically perform actions on email and newsgroup messages • Every rule must have a condition and an action • Importing and Exporting • Easily transfer Windows Mail data from one computer to another • Contacts • Messages • Improved Search • Use the search box to quickly find a phrase in any or the email headers or message bodies. This applies to all folders and sub-folders.

Windows Mail Features • Windows Mail Communities • Lets you read email and newsgroups, but also rate the posts based on their usefulness. • Junk E-Mail Filters • Different levels of filtering • None • Low • High • Safe List Only • Permanently delete suspected junk mail • Phishing Filter • Add Sender to Safe Sender or Blocked list • Add Sender’s Domain to Safe Sender or Blocked list

  11. Windows Contacts • Used to store contact information for individuals • Through Windows Mail • Through Start>All Programs>Windows Contacts 11

  12. Windows Calendar • Used to store appointments and tasks • Calendar can be published to a shared network location or to the Internet • iCalendar (.ics) in a shared location

  13. Windows Fax and Scan • Used to scan documents and to send and receive faxes without a fax machine • Must create an account to send or receive faxes • Must create a windows firewall exception for Windows Fax and Scan service.

  14. Windows Meeting Space • Replacement for NetMeeting • Used to collaborate with up to 10 Windows Vista users • Share applications • Show your desktop • Distribute and collaboratively edit documents • Create notes for users • Uses People Near Me to connect to other users on the network

Windows Meeting Space • IPv6 must be enabled, as it is a requirement of Window Meeting Space • All communications, including the invite are encrypted • Windows Firewall must have an exception for Windows Meeting Space • People Near Me only works on the same network subnet, but you can email an invitation to others who are not (.wcinv file)

  16. Windows Media Player 11 • Enables you to: • Play digital media • Rip music • Burn CDs and DVDs • Synchronize files to MP3 players • Shop for digital media online

Windows Media Center • Improves on XP Media Center • Only available in Vista Home Premium and Ultimate • Enables you to: • Record and watch TV • With a TV tuner card • Listen to the radio • Play audio or video from a file, CD, or DVD • Burn a CD or DVD • Watch a slide show • Stream or download online music • Play online games on demand • Stream digital media to a Windows Media Center Extender (MCE) device

Media Center Extenders (MCEs) • Enables you to watch or record TV, watch videos, listen to music, and view pictures. • MCE devices include: • Network-capable TVs • Network-capable DVD players • Xbox 360s • Setup: • requires the eight-digit Setup Key of the MCE device • requires that the device and computer can communicate over the network • Firewall port open

Windows Sideshow • Enables you to view information on an alternative display device, such as: • LCD display on the lid of a laptop or keyboard • Mobile phone display • Sideshow-enabled TV or LCD • There are not many Sideshow devices available to the public yet • Stock Ticker • Home Theater Remotes • Modern day sticky notes for refrigerator.

Windows Sync Center • Enables you to synchronize music and files between your computer and a network folder or mobile device. • Windows Mobile phone, PDA, Portable music or video player, other Vista Computers • Cannot synchronize to a network folder with Vista Starter, Home Basic, or Home Premium • One-way and two-way synchronization available • Manual, Scheduled, or on event like logon or logoff

Windows CardSpace • Enables you to create cards that are used to send personal information to websites • Windows CardSpace is a system for creating relationships with Website and online services. • Types of cards: • Personal cards • Created by you and used to send personal data • Managed cards • Created by online businesses, like banks, and stores data that they provide. • Data is secured using PIN numbers. • If you forget your PIN, you will have to delete and recreate the card
