  5. General Introduction to the work in 3GPP

  6. Work in 3GPP is organized around the concept of release which can be defined as a complete set of functionalities for a full cellular network allowing new set of services to be deployed by operators • After completing a long evolution of the Wideband CDMA radio technology, 3GPP decided to work on a new concept of radio technology to allow further evolution having in mind a long term evolution. LTE was born. But this does not stop completely parallel evolution of the WCDMA

  8. LTE Access Network Architecture

LTE Standard • Layer 1 specification • It can be separated in 2 parts • First part resulting from the work in RAN WG1 dealing with the description of the physical layer is now subject to the correction phase since last term.Functionalities described are complete and no major changes are expected. Set of specification contained in 36.2xx series • Second part mainly concerning the Requirement and the Performances still need to be completed but this is already considered as complete at 60% level. It is anticipated that this should be completed in December 2008. This work is mainly in the hand of WG4. This is a key activity as it is the premises for the tests activities. Set of specification contained in 36.1xx series

Layer 2 and Layer 3 (Signaling over Interfaces) • Over the radio interface: • Mainly under responsibility of RAN WG2 • It covers all aspects related to the MAC, RLC and RRC • Set of specification contained in 36.3xx series • In between the Core and the Access Network • Covers all the aspects from physical layer of the interfaces S1, X1 and X2 • Set of specification contained in 36.4xx series

  11. User Equipment Testing activities • WG5 is in charge of defining the test specification for the User Equipment designed by 3GPP. This covers the two following aspects: • Tests of the User Equipment part covering the Radio Interface (Access Stratum) • Tests of the User Equipment part covering the User/Core Network interface (Non Access Stratum) • Work has already started. Discussion on the priority of test development between TSG RAN and the Working Group started in June and are still under way

  13. This date was set considering work plan for AS(LTE) signaling only. Work plan that includes NAS signaling still needs to be confirmed in the RAN5 work plan (awaiting progress in CT1 mainly).

  14. Introduction to LTE advanced

LTE Advanced • ITU-R is currently investigating 4G and has solicited all organization for proposing technology as candidate for radio interface • 3GPP had recently organized two workshops to examine this request • At the last plenary it has been decided to answer to ITU-R with an evolution of the radio technology already proposed in as an IMT 2000 technology: LTE • Here follows the foreseen evolutions already under study in 3GPP

Main Characteristics for LTE Advance • The objective of Further Advancements for E-UTRA is as follows: • Define a framework for further advancements of E-UTRA and E-UTRAN (to be referred to as Advanced E-UTRA and Advanced EUTRAN considering: • The time schedule of ITU-R • That the work on Advanced E-UTRA and Advanced E-UTRAN must not introduce any delay to the completion of the Release 8 specification of E-UTRA and E-UTRAN • That the general enhancements of specifications for Release 8 E-UTRA and E-UTRAN are maintained and progressed in a focused and efficient manner.

Define requirements for Advanced E-UTRA and Advanced E-UTRAN based on the ITU-R requirements for IMT-Advanced as well as 3GPP operators own requirements for advancing Release 8 E-UTRA AND E-UTRAN considering: • E-UTRA radio technology and architecture improvements • Support for all radio modes of operation • Interworking with legacy RATs (scenarios and performance requirements) • Backward compatibility of Advanced E-UTRA and Advanced E-UTRAN with Release 8 E-UTRA and E-UTRAN i.e. • an Release 8 E-UTRA terminal can work in an Advanced E-UTRAN, • an Advanced E-UTRA terminal can work in an Release 8 E-UTRAN and • non-backward compatible elements could be considered based on RAN decision • Newly identified frequency bands and existing frequency bands, and their advantages and limitations, in particular, the consideration of the WRC-07 conclusions, to ensure that Advanced E-UTRA can accommodate radio channel bandwidths commensurate with the availability in parts of the world of wideband channels in the spectrum allocations (above 20 MHz) and at the same time being mindful on the need to accommodate those parts of the world where the spectrum allocations will not have availability of wideband channels 

  18. Identify potential solutions, technologies for the Advanced E-UTRA and Advanced E-UTRAN. The study areas include: • Physical layer • Radio interface layer 2 and RRC • E-UTRAN architecture • RF, including Aspects of wider channel bandwidth than 20 MHz • Advanced system concepts • To develop documents that will serve as a basis for the documentation to be submitted to ITU-R to provide the 3GPP proposals for IMT-Advanced: • An “Early Proposal” submission that would be sent to ITU-R, to be agreed at RAN #41 (9-12 September 2008), for submission to WP 5D #3 (8-15 October 2008).

  19. A “Complete Technology” submission that would be sent to ITU-R, to be agreed at RAN #44 (26-29 May 2009), for submission to WP 5D #5 (planned for 10-17 June 2009). • A “Final” submission to incorporate updates, additional specific details or feature additions, and the required self-evaluation that would be sent to ITU-R, to be agreed at RAN #45 (22-25 September 2009), for submission to WP 5D #6 (planned for 13-20 Oct 2009).

Conclusion • As can be seen from the previous slide 3GPP is fully busy for a certain number of years with covering at the same time: • Evolution of WCDMA • Completion of the development of LTE • Definition of LTE advance • LTE is part of IMT advance process in ITU-R and 3GPP will provide the SDO with the evaluation of the technology
