  1. CrIMSS Temperature Validation CrIMSS minus COSMIC AIRS minus COSMIC Day 122 – 128 (1-7 May 2012) Robert Knuteson, Michelle Feltz, Hank Revercomb, and Dave Tobin University of Wisconsin-Madison CIMSS CrIMSS Product Review 12 June 2012

  2. TOPICS • COSMIC GPS RO • Example of CrIMSS product maps • Preliminary AVTP Cal/Val using COSMIC & AIRS • Recommendations

  3. Matchups were found between COSMIC and CrIMSS retrievals of temperature (collocated and within 1 hour). The same matchup software was used with AIRS and COSMIC. The COSMIC data is used a common reference to compare CrIMSS and AIRS retrievals on a daily basis. 4. CrIMSS Temperature Level : 100 mb(23 April 2012 Day 114) 240 210 180 • This figure only plots the granules which are collocated with a GPS RO observation. • CrIMSS temperatures appear to be qualitatively reasonable. • Preliminary quantitative evaluation of the AVTP product made using COSMIC GPS RO and AIRS L2 science team products (Version 5).

  5. CrIMSS Profile Cloudiness Flag 2-Cloudy 1-PartlyCloudy 0-Clear • The following analysis includes all cloud conditions.

  6. CrIMSS Profile Overall Data Quality Flag (QF5) 3-Poor 2-MW only 1-IR only 0-GoodMW+IR • This analysis excludes Poor (QF5 = 3) cases but includes all other cases. The result is dominated by MW only retrievals.

  7. Number of Samples A one week periodwas selected forquantitativecomparison withAIRS data usingCOSMIC GPS RO profiles as a common reference. 1-7 May 2012 (Day 122-128) CrIMSS has fewervalid matchupswith COSMIC athigh latitudes dueto the large numberof “poor” qualityCrIMSS retrievalsat those latitudes. 14. Conclusions/Recommendations • The CrIMSS data product file has been produced consistently since April 2, 2012 using ATMS data and CrIS (limited). • The product files are readable and appear to be filled with useable values. • We recommend that the CrIMSS data product be declared ‘Beta’ status.Comments: • The CrIMSS AVTP (Temperature) profile is showing degraded performance relative to AIRS for data processed in May 2012. • This is believed to be due to the small number of CrIS spectra which are successfully included in the current CrIMSS product retrieval. • Use of the COSMIC RO profiles as a common reference will provide a useful means of monitoring CrIMSS and AIRS relative EDR performance.
