  4.  Your task • Your teacher will give you a picture of a typical puritan. Annotate the picture with the characteristics of a typical puritan. Use Wilkes p.54 or Dawson, p.76

  5. Characteristics of a Puritan Bible used as a guide to life Appearance – simple, plain clothes Food – simple Sunday – ‘Lord’s Day’, keep it holy; no games Behaviour – laws against drunkenness & swearing; adultery punishable by death Free time – bear-baiting, horse-racing & cock fighting suppressed; alehouses & theatres closed; gambling banned; May Day & festivals banned

  6. Devise an acronym to help remember key characteristics of Puritanism. • Write a ‘Tweet’ to sum up what Puritanism stood for in no more than 140 characters

  7.  Your task Read Wilkes p.56 or Dawson p.76 and note down why the Puritans didn’t like Christmas. Assess how successful the laws were banning Christmas Read on and list the reasons why the laws were eventually repealed.

  11.  Extension task • Produce a factoid (1 side a4) on Oliver Cromwell. Include details on his early life, the Civil War, his role as Protector and his death. Find out how his skull ended up in a Cambridge University College.

  12.  Homework • Produce a piece of Puritan merchandise, e.g. tea towel, T-shirt, poster listing some of the activities banned by Puritans and briefly explaining the reasons why they are banned. Iphone case T-Shirt Mouse mat
