  3. Where I got the info… • ABP website - www.abp.org • History of board pass rates and ITE since 1998 • Previous UNSOM Peds Residents who are now board certified, esp successful first time test takers

ABP General Peds Initial Certification Exam • PURPOSE • To provide assurance to the public and the medical profession that a certified pediatrician has: • Successfully completed an accredited educational program • Possesses the knowledge, skills and experience requisite to the provision of high quality care in pediatrics

  5. ABP General Peds Initial Certification Exam • When? • Annually in the Fall • Next year: • Exam: October 10, 2011 • Registration • New Applicant: Dec 2, 2010 – February 24, 2011 • Late registration: February 25, 2011 – May 5, 2011

  6. ABP General Peds Initial Certification Exam • Where? • Multiple locations throughout the US • Closest sites: • Los Angeles, CA • Phoenix, AZ • San Francisco, CA • How much? … Wait, how much? • Regular: $2,105 • Late: $2,430 (late fee $325)

ABP General Peds Initial Certification Exam • The exam: • One day, approx 8.5 hour exam • 3.5 hour sessions x 2 • Morning and afternoon • One and half hour lunch break • 330-350 questions total • Approx 1.5 min per question • Drinks, food (quiet food) allowed • Bathroom breaks as needed • #2 pencil and paper

  8. ABP General Peds Initial Certification Exam • Question Styles • Short, one-line • Longer vignette with lab values • Pictures • Diagnostic pictures • Includes radiographs, EKG’s, audiograms, tympanogram (even a gram stain – yikes!) • MOST LIKELY • LEAST LIKELY • EXCEPT • Matching?

  9. ABP Board Exam • How is it Scored? • Scale 0-800 • Passing score 410 (approx 71% or so questions correct on exam) • Similar scoring system to in-training exam

  10. HELPFUL TIP #1 THE FIRST THING I DID: “mock” practice exam. I went to the library into a private study room and took 350 question test under “real conditions.” I saw how many I got wrong and was INSPIRED to study. • Lausanne Class of 2009

  11. HELPFUL TIP #2 I think the best way to assure passing the exam is to do as many practice questions as possible (in addition to reading the answers). • Shyama Class 2009

  20. MORE HELPFUL TIPS… • Listen to UCLA audio CD’s while driving, cooking, etc • Read monthly Peds in Review articles during residency • Read ABP Content Specifications for specific areas before/during the corresponding rotation • Review common lab value normals before taking the exam

  21. MORE HELPFUL TIPS… • Study generic drug names – brand names not used on exam • Stay at the hotel the night before the exam • Get to exam place 1-2 days early, get a massage, and relax • DON’T study the day before the exam
