Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees
Pastoral scene of the gallant south
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth

  4. BIOGRAPHY Born on April 7, 1915 in Baltimore Maryland African American singer Billie Holiday was born into poverty by an unwed teen mom. Billie was always a hard worker. Her first job was running errands and cleaning prostitution houses. At the age of twelve she moved to New York City with her mother. Due to the great depression Sadie Fagan (holidays mother) lost her job. In 1932 Billie Holiday auditioned for a singing job and got it. She began sing at different clubs around Harlem were she was finally discovered by Benny Goodman who then used her on a record. From then on her career took off.

  6. Harlem Renaissance Billie Holiday was a part of the Harlem Renaissance as well as James Baldwin, and Langston Hughes. Billie Holiday’s music really spoke to people. Her life was very hard and that’s why people really related to her because she went through a lot of things that they have been through.
