GEOGRAPHY • NZ consists of two large islands • - the North Island • - the South Island • and a smaller third island • It‘s mainly mountainous, the highest • peak is Mount Cook in the Southern Alps • (3,764 m) • The Northern Island is famous volcanic area • The climate is very pleasant all year round • with mild winters and warm summers • The capital is Wellington, • other big cities are • Auckland, Hamilton and Christchurch

  7. HISTORY, POPULATION • the first European to see NZ was • the Dutch navigator Abel Tasman, • who discovered western coast in the 17th • cent. • Captain James Cook explored the coasts • in the 18th century

  8. the first settlers in NZ were Polynesian tribes – the Maoris, who migrated • from the south Asian mainland • English is the official language, but Maori is also spoken there • population is over 3 million, about 85 % of people are of European origin, • about 9 % are Polynesian MAORI DANCERS

ECONOMY, SPORTS, FAUNA • New Zealand is rich agricultural country • the green farmlands are suitable for sheep breeding • fruit and vegetables are grown there as well • the country produces mainly wool and dairy products • New Zealand’s fauna and flora are unique • the national icon is the Kiwi bird • the main natural resources are natural gas, coal • and sulphur • the most popular sports are rugby, cricket, golf, • tennis and swimming
